Can Anyone Dethrone Cheruiyot at Boston?

robert-cheruiyot-boston-marathon-winnerRobert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, the willowy Kenyan who overcame a childhood of destitution to become a three-time Boston Marathon champion and the inaugural World Marathon Majors points leader, is poised to win yet another Boston title on Monday. Can anyone stop him?

“Many people are here to win,” said the smiling Cheruiyot as he chatted with reporters yesterday in a fancy ballroom at the Copley Plaza Hotel. “But I don’t know what place I will be.”

Cheruiyot, who won here in 2003, 2006 and 2007 and set the course record of 2:07:14 with his second victory, is a solid favorite to collect his fourth Boston title on Monday.

Kenyan Athletes Trying to Cope With Unrest

kenya.mapWhile the horrifying death of Kenyan Olympian Lucas Sang and the wounding of world marathon champion Luke Kibet have made headlines, much of the information coming out of Kenya from the athletics community is that most athletes remain safe, but training and travel has been curtailed due to the obvious dangers.

Agent Lisa Buster reports that world marathon champion Catherine Ndereba and her husband Anthony Maina are safe, but housebound in Nairobi. Road runner Linus Maiyo, who lives in Eldoret, is unable to train and is staying indoors.

Tom Ratcliffe, who manages marathoners Stephen Kiogora, Evans Rutto and Ben Maiyo says that his athletes are fine, but hesitant to go out for training. “Most guys are staying in their home areas, as they want to stay close to their families and do not want to travel,” he wrote in an e-mail message.

Kenya reassures IAAF on World XC security

world_xc_champs_2007_logo_mombasa_kenya.gifResponding to a statement issued by U.S. officials on Monday, the Kenyan government today reassured the IAAF that a “specific security plan” is already in place for the upcoming World Cross Country Championships taking place in Mombasa, on March 24.

On Monday, the U.S. Embassy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi warned of a possible “unspecified terrorist attack” from “alleged extremist elements” at the upcoming world championships, but gave no further details.

Today, the Kenyan Government told the IAAF, the sport’s international governing body, that security measures:

“Involving all branches of the country’s military and police authorities, is already in place to protect all athletes and participants during their stay in Kenya.”
