Organizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, which plays host to the 2008 USA Women’s 10 Mile Championship, announced today that Kara Goucher will challenge Katie McGregor for that title on Sunday, Oct. 5., in Minneapolis, Minn.
Goucher is back in training after doubling at the Beijing Olympics in the 5000 and 10,000 meters last month. She made the final in the shorter event, finishing ninth, and placed tenth in the longer event in a personal best 30:55.16. This will be her first 10 mile road race, but at last year’s Great North Run half-marathon in Newcastle, England, she hit the 10 mile mark in an unofficial 50:59 (she won the race in 1:06:57).

Abdi Abdirahman, the two-time Olympian from Tucson, Ariz., confirmed his status as a favorite for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with a strong win at the USA Men’s 10 Mile Championship held in conjunction with the Medtronic TC 10 Mile on Sunday morning.
Abdirahman, who won his third straight national 10 mile title and $10,000, clocked a course-record of 47 minutes, 34 seconds to out-last Minnesota favorite-son Jason Lehmkuhle, the national runner-up at 47:48. James Carney ran a well-paced effort to take third in 48:03.
Olympian Dan Browne, who won the 2002 Twin Cities Marathon over some of the same roads, finished 21st after running near the front through five miles.
The race was contested in unseasonably warm conditions and high humidity. The race started under 72 degree skies with 87% humidity and a 68 degree dew point.
