Abdi Abdirahman, the two-time Olympian from Tucson, Ariz., confirmed his status as a favorite for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with a strong win at the USA Men’s 10 Mile Championship held in conjunction with the Medtronic TC 10 Mile on Sunday morning.
Abdirahman, who won his third straight national 10 mile title and $10,000, clocked a course-record of 47 minutes, 34 seconds to out-last Minnesota favorite-son Jason Lehmkuhle, the national runner-up at 47:48. James Carney ran a well-paced effort to take third in 48:03.
Olympian Dan Browne, who won the 2002 Twin Cities Marathon over some of the same roads, finished 21st after running near the front through five miles.
The race was contested in unseasonably warm conditions and high humidity. The race started under 72 degree skies with 87% humidity and a 68 degree dew point.

Abdi Abdirahman (Tucson, Ariz.), captured his third USA Men’s 10 Mile title in a row this weekend at the Medtronic Twin Cities 10 Miler, running an event record of 47:34, to finish 13 seconds ahead of local favorite Jason Lehmkuhle (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Despite warm temperatures and high humidity (72 degrees/88 percent), Abdirahman dominated from the gun. Passing the first mile in 4:42, only Dan Browne (Portland, Ore), the recent 2007 USA 20 km and 5 km champion, Lehmkuhle, and James Carney (Boulder, Colo.) dared try to match strides with the two-time U.S. Olympian.

29th Annual Bolder Boulder: A Record Setting Day

Women from Kenya and Ethiopia set the pace in Sunday’s 29th annual Bolder Boulder 10K Memorial Day race. The rivals started strong, earning the top two spots in the individual women’s professional race. Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 33:42 and Amane Gobena of Ethiopia finished second with a time of 33:59.
While Ethiopia took hold of the first place slot in the women’s international team challenge, the U.S. managed to follow them in second place with runners Elva Dryer, Kate O’Neill, and Sara Slattery placing third, sixth, and thirteenth respectively. Slattery, an Olympic hopeful who won the race last year, was disappointed with her performance.
“Sometimes it’s just not there,” Slattery said. “Every time someone would come up on me, I’d try to accelerate with them, but I didn’t have the gas today. I think the combination of a fast (first) mile and the heat might have done it.”
