1996 Olympic Trials men’s 1,500m runner-up Jim Sorensen set a world masters record Sunday night at the 2007 USATF West Region Track & Field Championships in Los Angeles, Calif.

Sorensen became the fastest over-40 1,500-meter runner in history in finishing in 3 minutes 44.06 seconds, which bettered the previous record of 3:44.06 by Luiz Jose Gonsalvez as a 41-year-old in 1999.

Sorenson’s next stated target is the M40 men’s mile world record of 4:02.53, which is owned by Great Britain’s David Moorcroft.

susan-loken.jpgSusan Loken of Phoenix, Ariz., won her third consecutive title at the More Magazine Marathon here today, completing the hilly five-loop course in Central Park in two hours, 47 minutes and 52 seconds.

Loken, 43, the reigning U.S. masters marathon champion, dominated the race, which is limited to women 40 and over, leading from wire-to-wire.

“I think everybody’s here to share the same experience,” said Loken, a mother of three. “We’re all in the best shape of our lives and we’re over 40 and it’s a great event.”

Loken looks for three-peat at More Magazine Marathon

Posted March 23rd, 2007 at 10:30 AM by Martha Jones

Section: News & Results, Marathons

susan-loken.jpgReigning U.S. masters marathon champion, Susan Loken, will be on the starting line of Sunday’s More Magazine Marathon in an attempt to win here for the third time in a row. This will be the fourth annual running of the only marathon exclusively for women over 40.

Loken, 43, set the event record of 2 hours, 45 minutes, 35 seconds in her first appearance in 2005; the time remains the fastest-ever for a marathon run by a woman entirely in Central Park. A mother of three, Loken did not start running seriously until she was 39.

“I am very excited to come back to New York and run the More Magazine Marathon,” said Loken in a prepared statement. “This event has given me some great memories, and I’m proud to serve as an example to women my age that we can still compete at such a high level.”

The event also features a half-marathon in which teams of two women, one of whom must be over 40, compete together. Leading this year’s field is the team of Lyubov Denisova, 35, a Russian who lives in Gainesville, Fla., and Trina Painter, 40, of Flagstaff, Ariz.
