USA National Distance Running Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2008

During the recent Boston Marathon weekend, the USA National Distance Running Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2008. Members of the class of 2008 are: Amby Burfoot, Johnny Hayes and Priscilla Welch.

In 1968 Burfoot, as a college senior, was the first American to win the Boston Marathon since 1957 with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 17 seconds. In 1908 Hayes was the first American to win the Olympic Marathon against a truly international field. Welch holds several masters records at a variety of distances including the marathon (2:26:51).

Silvester sets American masters record

National Track & Field Hall of Famer Jay Silvester set a M70 American masters record last Wednesday at the Huntsman World Senior Games in Saint George, Utah.

The 1972 Olympic silver medalist and former world record holder in the discus, Silvester’s winning throw of 50.27 meters/164 feet 11 inches smashed the previous record of 48.06m/157-8 set by Wendell Palmer in 2002.

Also at the Huntsman World Senior Games, Linda Cohn shattered the W55 American record in the javelin with her heave of 40.34m/132-4. The previous record of 28.06m/92-1 was set by LaTanya Glass in 2005. Marjorie Fitzgerald broke the W80 American 100 meter record, crossing the line in 18.76 seconds.

Records fall as USA Masters Outdoor Championships conclude

USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships University of Maine, 2007More world and American records were broken during the final day of competition of the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships here Sunday on the campus of the University of Maine.

More than 1,100 athletes ages 30 to 95+ competed in the four day event.

Numerous records were broken throughout the meet and a number of individuals added to that total before competition came to a close Sunday afternoon.

Michelsohn, Gatling set masters records in San Fran

Marie-Louise Michelsohn and Darnell Gatling set masters records recently in the W65 and M45 age-groups, respectively.

Michelsohn of New York, N.Y., set a new W65 age-group world record in the 5,000 meters on July 7. Michelsohn crossed the finish line in 20 minutes 27.08 seconds at the Pride Track & Field Meet in San Francisco, which bettered the previous record of 20:42.4 set last year by Australia’s Theresia Baird. Michelsohn’s performance also bettered the previous U.S. record of 22:41.8 set in 1986 by Jaclyn Caselli.

Darnell Gatling of New York established a new U.S. M45 masters record in the 400m hurdles Saturday at the USATF National Club Track & Field Championships at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York. Gatling finished the race in 55.72 seconds, which betters the listed record time set by Jack Greenwood in 1972 of 55.7 seconds (hand time).
