run a marathon for college credit through lake superior college virtual campusAmong the thousands of runners who will participate in running events during Grandma’s Marathon weekend this June, a few dozen will be there to take a final exam. Lake Superior College is offering its unique online marathon training course again this spring, providing an opportunity to train for and run Grandma’s Marathon or the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon for college credit.

The course provides race training and nutritional information in addition to history, etiquette, and basic skills. Course work is presented online through the Lake Superior College Virtual Campus, making it easily accessible to students at a distance. Enrolled students are guaranteed entry into the marathon or half marathon. They may also arrange to compete in a comparable race to meet course requirements.

Native Duluthian Katie Koski will teach the online physical education course. Koski is an elite runner who hopes to qualify for this year’s Olympic trials in Boston. She was asked to teach the online course for Lake Superior College because of her experience competing in Grandma’s Marathon. She has run in the event eight times, finishing in the top ten on several occasions.

pedialyteNext time you’re in the supermarket, take a stroll down the infant aisle. No, not to stock-up on Pampers or for that sale on sippy-cups…this walk on the tame side is for you.

If Motherhood hasn’t hit you yet, you’ve probably never ventured into the Gerber area. Yet, even if you’ve got a stash of Mother’s Day cards, visit (or revisit) this land-of-plenty with newborn eyes and with a novel toddler in mind: You.

A brand-spanking-new-view of baby paraphenalia is crying out, practically crawling off the shelves for your attention. The drink of champions (little and large, it seems), the nectar of the stars (athletes and your under-one-year-old), the elixir for all ages, is Pedialyte.

Long distance runners led the trend, beginning way back in the 1980s. Leaps and bounds ahead of the slower starters, marathoners …

marathon-training.gifIn 1999 I posted two essays titled “The Decline of American Marathoners” & “Why Have They Declined?” on Runner’s World and Merv Competitive forums, which I subsequently updated in 2001.

They generated extensive discussions concerning the deterioration in performance of American marathoners throughout the 1990’s, as compared to the 1970-80’s.

The decline at the elite level was well documented by official records. Not only were U.S. elites no longer competitive on the international racing scene, but they could not even match the performances of their predecessors a decade or two earlier.

Can intense exercise, such as marathon running, affect a man’s sexual performance?

couple_in_bed.jpgA study in the medical journal, Fertility and Sterility, shows that the only sexual change caused by hard exercise is a decrease in the volume of a man’s semen.

Twenty-four marathon runners had their blood and semen checked regularly as they increased their training for competition. All sex hormones remained the same except for an increase in the hormone, prolactin, which did not affect their ability or desire to make love. The only change in sexual function was a decreased volume of semen.

bright_sun_on_the_beach.JPGIt’s everywhere; on TV, in magazines, on thefinalsprint.com! Exercise can improve your life - its positive, its fun, and it’s good for your health . . . or is it?

A recent study published in The New York Times suggests that there may be a link between distance running and skin cancer.

Lead author of the report, Dr. Christina Ambros-Rudolph, told The New York Times that 210 marathoners, and a control group of 210 non-runners, had their skin examined by dermatologists. Any and all spots or skin damage were recorded. What the results showed was quite interesting:
