Gilmore Wins, Sets Course Record at Surf City USA Half-Marathon

Peter Gilmore [MarathonGuide.com] of San Mateo, CA started his year and preparation for April’s Flora London Marathon with a victory at the Surf City USA Half Marathon on Sunday.
Gilmore edged Russia’s Dmitry Safronov by 11 seconds and set a new course record despite the poor weather conditions with a time of 1:03:53.
Although the race was largely a tune-up for London, Gilmore’s record-setting time and first place finish were welcome successes after being forced to drop out of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials last November due to illness.
With a win and successful 2008 debut under his belt, Gilmore now faces the arduous task of going up against an extremely competitive elite men’s field in London that includes reigning World and Olympic marathon champions Luke Kibet and Stefano Baldini, former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat, defending London and 2005 champion Martin Lel, world half-marathon record holder Sammy Wanjiru, former double World Champion Jaouad Gharib, and fellow Americans Ryan Hall and Olympic silver medalistMeb Keflezighi.

Our friends at MarathonGuide.com have drafted a fascinating report on marathon participants in the USA for 2007. Some key findings:
. 407,000 runners finished marathons in the USA in 2007, up 2.3% from 2006 despite the closing of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon after three hours and 50 minutes and several thousand missed finishers at the Honolulu Marathon.
. 60.5% of USA marathon finishers were men and 39.5% were women.
. The ING New York City Marathon was –once again– the largest marathon with 38,557 finishers.
. The average age of a marathon finisher in the USA was 38.9 years (40.5 for men and 36.5 for women).
You can read the entire exclusive report at this link. It’s a must read for anyone in the running business.

After 15 Minutes of Fame, Wardian Back in Marathon Action Again

Section: News & Results, Marathons
After leading the USA Olympic Team Trials - Men’s Marathon on Nov. 3, in New York City for the first five kilometers, marathoner Michael Wardian was back on the roads again, winning yesterday’s OBX Marathon in North Carolina in 2:24:16.
This was nothing unusual for the 33 year-old athlete from Arlington, Va., who has completed 13 marathons this year, five of them sub-2:30. In both March and April he ran two marathons just six days apart. He’s won four marathons this year.
At the Trials, Wardian was the race’s early leader, running alone through 5 km (16:20). He faded to finish 92nd in 2:30:54, running halves of 1:09:26 and 1:21:28.
