Paula Radcliffe, proud new mother & marathon record holder, returns to the track

paula_radcliffe.jpgPaula Radcliffe has started running again just twelve days after delivering her baby girl. Her daughter, Ilsa, was born after 27 long hours of labor on January 17, 2007.

The world record holder runner gave an exclusive interview with “Hello!” magazine, a popular publication in the UK. “After five days I was doing lots of pushing the pram but I wasn’t doing much else.” She told the magazine with her husband, Gary Lough, by her side. She went on to say:

“I did my first little jog after 12 days and since then I’ve been running alternate days.”

Grete Waitz: Legendary runner and woman of valor

greta-waitz-stamp.jpgIn the world of competitive running, a bulk of the media’s attention and fanfare is placed on men. This is really unfortunate as there has been, and continues to be, truly spectacular female athletes. Legendary runner Grete Waitz is a perfect example.

From track and field to marathons, she has done it all, and done it well. Perhaps her most well known success comes from being a nine time winner of the New York City Marathon. She is the only runner, female or male, to come anywhere near that record streak of domination.

Ryan Hall sets new North American record for the Half-Marathon (59:43)

ryan-hall-new-half-marathon-record.jpgRyan Hall battled the elements to become at the first North American to ever run a half-marathon in less than one-hour at today’s Aramco Houston Half-Marathon. The half-marathon served as the USA Half-Marathon Championships.

Hall, who is only 24-years old, ran triumphantly against an all-star field to set a new North American half-marathon record with a time of 59 minutes and 43 seconds. [Click here to see video footage of his record-setting performance].

Hall flew past the previous record of 1:00:28 which had been held by German Silva and Dionicio Cerón since 1994. Hall also set a new American record, beating Mark Curp’s 1985 time of 1:00:55.

Coming off Berlin victory, Haile Gebrselassie wins Fukuoka Marathon

Haile Gebrselassie.gifThe four-time World and two-time Olympic 10,000m champion, HHaile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, ran 2:06:52 to win today’s 60th Fukuoka Marathon in Fukuoka, Japan. His time was just one second shy of the course record set by Atsushi Fujita in 2000. Fujita competed in the race, but he finished in eighth place with a time of 2:11:50.

The race began with unseasonably cold weather and strong winds; causing the runners to start slow. However, the pace began to pick up around the 5k mark; leading the pace to be about 3 minutes per km. Read the rest of this entry »


Tosa Defeats Takahashi at the 2006 Tokyo International Women’s Marathon

2006 Tokyo International Womens MarathonReiko Tosa defeated a competitive field, including 2000 Olympic champion Naoko Takahashi, at today’s Tokyo International Women’s Marathon. Tosa’s winning time was 2:26:15. Although Tosa was expected to place well, Takahashi had been the favorite to come away with this year’s title.

Takahashi was the first woman to ever break the 2:20 mark at the 2001 Berlin Marathon and last year’s Tokyo Women’s Marathon champion. Takahashi finished a disappointing third and ran her slowest time marathon time ever. In addition, this morning’s race marked the first time she had ever lost to another Japanese woman and her worst finish since her debut at the 1997 Osaka Ladies Marathon. Cheruiyot to Defend Title at 2007 Chicago Marathon

cheruiyot chicago winner1.jpgThe 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon champion Robert K. Cheruiyot (KEN) has committed to return to Chicago and defend his title in 2007.

Cheruiyot won the 2006 race on Sunday, October 22, 2006 in a time of 2:07:35.

Cheruiyot has won his last two marathons; both of which were part of the World Marathon Majors.

He set a new course record and a P.R. at the last Boston Marathon this past spring and won the before-mentioned 2006 Chicago Marathon. These victories made him the the current leader in the World Marathon Majors with 50 points from his back-to-back championships.

Championship Ceremony Today for Robert K. Cheruiyot

chicago-marathon-logo2.jpgPRESS RELEASE: Robert K. Cheruiyot, champion of The 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, was released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital today.

The Kenyan runner was taken to the facility following his fall at the finish line of Sunday’s race and was treated for a head injury.

A championship ceremony and media availability with Cheruiyot will be held today at 4:00 p.m. at the Chicago Hilton. Details for the ceremony follow.
