Ethiopians, BAA, Shoe4Africa Win Big at Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Races in Boston, MA

boston athletic association logoBlustery winds, blue skies, and temperatures in the lower 50s created the quintessential New England cross country backdrop for the 782 finishers in Sunday’s Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Races, presented by adidas and the Boston Athletic Association, and directed by USA Track & Field (New England Association) and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with Boston Centers for Youth and Families.

Westchester (New York) Track Club repeated its feat from last year, sending both the male and female champions to the winner’s circle, and Aziza Ayilu – an Ethiopian residing in the Bronx – became the first female to win back-to-back since the legendary Lynn Jennings successfully defended her title in 1994-’95.

Three-Peat for Clement at U.S. Championships

Treniere ClementThe key action on the pentultimate day of the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships here was at the 1500m distance, where Treniere Clement won her third consecutive title and Jordan Hasay, competing in the Finish Line Junior Track & Field Championshps, won her first junior title.

Clement, the former Georgetown star, followed the early pace set by Tiffany McWilliams, sitting comfortably in third place through 400m (1:06:06) and 800m (2:12.15). Christin Wurth-Thomas was sitting in second, and she was getting ready to break the race open.

Kastor & Keflezighi to return to Gate River Run for Champs

deena.jpgDeena Kastor, the 2007 USA Cross Country Champion, and Meb Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic marathon silver medalist, will try to win their respective U.S. 15-K titles –and beat each other– at the 30th running of the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday, March 10, organizers announced yesterday.

Kastor and Keflezighi, both of whom live and train in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., will be competing against each other in the Equalizer division of the race. The elite women will start five minutes ahead of the men and the first athlete to cross the finish line will receive a bonus of $5,000 on top of the winner’s check of $12,000. Since the race introduced the Equalizer division in 2004, Keflezighi has won it twice, in 2004 and 2006.
