Section: News & Results, Road Racing

Sara SlatterySara Slattery of Lafayette, Colo., won today’s U.S. Women’s 8-K Championship in Akron, Ohio. For the 26 year-old athlete, who won the Pan Am Games 10,000m title in 2007, it was her first ever U.S. open title on any surface.

Slattery went for victory early, sharing the lead with race favorite Katie McGregor. They passed the first mile in 5:05, while a chase pack of eight women, including Amy Rudolph, Molly Huddle, Renee Metivier-Baillie and Lindsey Anderson, kept them in sight. On a gradual uphill in the sixth kilometer, Slattery eased away from McGregor and Metivier-Baillie, who had come up from the chase group, and found herself with a ten meter lead.

Lindsey Anderson 2008 U.S. Olympic SteeplechaserToday I had the pleasure of speaking with American steeplechaser Lindsey Anderson who over the past couple of seasons has become one of the best runners in the United States. She had a breakthrough season in 2007, finishing 2nd in the NCAA Championships steeplechase and then finishing 3rd at the US Outdoor Championships to earn a trip to Osaka. In 2008, she finished 2nd at the US Olympic Trails while setting a PR of 9:30.75, thus becoming the 5th fastest American steeplechaser of all time and earning a trip to the inaugural Olympic women’s 3000 meter Steeplechase. I caught up to Lindsey after her return from France where she ran a time of 9:45.28 to win the steeplechase in the DecaNation meet in Paris, France on September 6th, 2008.

Download the podcast to listen to Lindsey talk about her Olympic experience, her thoughts about the improvement in the women’s steeplechase, her role as assistant coach at Weber (pronounced “wee-ber”) State and how that helps her as an athlete, her plans for 2009 and the 2012 Olympics. Listen as Lindsey discusses the reality of competing as a clean athlete against possible cheaters, her plans to compete in road races over the next couple of months and much, much more!

Fireworks lit the night sky as Anna Willard shattered the American record in the Olympic Trials 3000m Steeplechase. She ran the race in 9:27.59. Lindsey Anderson (9:30.75) and Jenny Barringer (9:33.11) will join her in Beijing.

Going into the race, Willard and Barringer both wanted the record. Willard tried at the American Milers Club meet in Indianapolis and Barringer came close at the NCAA DI Championships, but neither succeeded. This was the day to do it. Barringer was in front until the last 800 meters.

“I wanted to go out and set the stage for an American record,” she said.

2008 Track & Field
Previews & Predictions:
Women’s Middle-Distance

Maria Mutola image courtesy of www.mariamutola.comMaria Mutola recently announced that she will retire at the end of the 2008 season. That’s a shame because she has been the ambassador of women’s 800m running ever since she broke on the world-class middle-distance running scene in 1991 with a time of 1:57.63. Since then she’s run between 1:55.19 and 1:58.98 a staggering 108 times. The only other woman to come even close to running that many world-class times in the 800m has been the great Cuban runner Ana Quirot, who ran between 1:54.44 and 1:58.95 a total of 72 times between 1986 and 1997. The 800m event will truly be diminished when Mutola retires.

First up was the men’s steeplechase which saw favorite Aaron Aguayo out fast from the gun with Arkansas’ Peter Kosgei, Florida State’s Andrew Lemoncello, and Mississippi’s Barnabas Kirui right on his heels. Aguayo continued to lead the foursome through four laps in 4:28.3, then Kirui jumped into the lead with three laps to go.
