ING New York City Marathon: 2008 Edition of Race is “One for the Record Books”

Section: News & Results, Marathons

Pro_Women_NYC_Marathon_2008The term “one for the record books” is often bandied about after races, but the 39th edition of the ING New York City Marathon probably merits that sobriquet. If not precisely “one for the books” it certainly turned out to be a race that will keep the scriveners busy for a while.

While no major marks were broken (women’s winner Paula Radcliffe felt the blustery, chilly winds might have cost her the course record) several secondary ones fell, most notably the women’s masters world record of 2:26:51 set by Britain’s Priscilla Welch in London 21 years ago. Ludmila Petrova, who won here in 2000, dogged Radcliffe for 24 Kara Goucher 2008 NYC Marathonmiles before being the last to succumb to the Briton’s relentless and relentlessly quickening pace and clocked 2:25:43 to place second.

Another record-breaker followed one place and 10 seconds behind Petrova; Kara Goucher’s 2:25:53 is the fastest debut by an American woman, bettering the 2:26:58 run by Deena Kastor in 2001. That was also the American women’s course record, which also now belongs to Goucher, who is the third fastest American woman ever.

Paula Radcliffe 2008 NYC Marathon ChampionPaula Radcliffe of Great Britain retained her title and Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil regained his at the ING New York City Marathon today.

Radcliffe, who controlled the race from the gun, captured her third victory over the five-borough course in 2:23:56. Unlike in her previous New York victories, Radcliffe was never challenged, finishing well ahead of Russian Ludmila Petrova, who clocked 2:25:43.

Gomes dos Santos, the 2006 winner, came from behind over the last two miles to win handily in 2:08:43 after overtaking Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri, who held on for second in 2:09:07.

Contesting her marathon debut, American Kara Goucher finished third clocking 2:25:53. Kenyan Rita Jeptoo was a distant fourth in 2:27:49.

New York City Marathon 08: Radcliffe Leads Through 10 Miles; Ndereba Falls Off Pace

Posted November 2nd, 2008 at 11:12 AM by Adam Jacobs

Section: News & Results, Marathons

Paula Radcliffe continues to look strong and has lead the entire way. Now through 10 miles in 56:25, Radcliffe has a steady trail of elites behind her - with Goucher in second and Wami & Tune trading places between third and fourth.

The single-file pack includes the rest of the favorites except for two-time Olympic silver medalist Catherine Ndereba who dropped off the pace after the 8 mile mark. One has to wonder whether or not Ndereba was able to fully heal and properly prepare for this race after finishing second at he Olympic marathon in Beijing.

Although Goucher had one misstep after the 10k mark, when she dropped her water bottle and let out a few choice words that we can’t republish here - she has looked very strong and comfortable running with this phenomenal field of elite women. Smith is just beginning to struggle a bit, falling off the pace by a few seconds.

Radcliffe ran mile 9 in 5:28 and mile 10 in 5:25; her second and third-fastest miles of the race. The question is, how much of a tole will this take on Radcliffe who has led the entire way in very windy conditions. Although she employed this strategy last year, she really only faced Wami as a challenger and was running in much better weather conditions.

The women are now heading into Queens - the birthplace of Goucher who said that she is embarking on a journey to hopefully become the greatest female marathoner in the world. Goucher lost her father, who was hit by a drunk driver, in NYC just after her fourth birthday.

Split Times:
Mile 6 - 34:20
10k Mark - 35:33
Mile 7 - 39:54
Mile 8 - 45:32
Mile 9 - 51:00
Mile 10 - 56:25

New York City Marathon 08: Radcliffe Looks to Replay Front-Running Style of 2007

Posted November 2nd, 2008 at 10:40 AM by Adam Jacobs

Section: News & Results, Marathons

Britain’s Paula Radcliffe, the world marathon record holder and reinging NYC Marathon champion, seems determined to employ the race strategy that worked so well for her last year: front-running.

She rook the lead in the very first mile, which started off slow (6:31) as they ran over the bridge and into the wind. Radcliffe has stayed in the lead for virtually every step since; leading the way through the initial five miles in 28:46.

The women are running in a single-file line with the Brit controlling the tempo. The pack of leaders behind Radcliffe include all of the pre-race favorites, such as Gete Wami (ETH), Kara Goucher (USA), Dire Tune (ETH), Rita Jeptoo (KEN), Kim Smith (NZL) and Catherine Ndereba (KEN).

Of particular interest is that Kara Goucher and Kim Smith have stayed tucked just behind Radcliffe and Wami, with Goucher even taking the lead for a few moments after the water stops. Both Smith and Goucher are making their marathon debuts and showing a fearless determination and confidence in their abilities to run with the best in the world.

Split Times:
Mile 1: 6:31
Mile 2: 11:54
5k Mark: 18:04
Mile 4: 23:04
Mile 5: 28:46

New York City Marathon 08: Elite Women Are Off!

ING New York City Marathon Logo The Final SprintIt’s 9:10am EST and the elite women have crossed the start line of today’s 2008 ING New York City Marathon.

Today’s weather, predicted to be mild later in the day, will likely serve as an extra challenger for these runners. That’s because right now it is about 41 degrees Fahrenheit, but with the wind chill - its just above freezing at 33 degrees. The wind, coming from the north at 15-20 MPH, will also be a large obstacle for these women. Humidity is at 55%.

The women’s field is simply outstanding and arguably one of the most competitive in marathon history.

Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain, holder of the World record at 2:15:25 as well as the next two fastest ever run, heads a small but formidable women’s elite field. It also includes Catherine Ndereba of Kenya, the former World record holder at 2:18:47 and winner of the 2007 IAAF World Championships Marathon in Osaka and second in Beijing 2008; and Gete Wami of Ethiopia (2:21:34 PB), winner of the first $500,000 World Marathon Majors series. If these three are in any race, you can pretty much count on them being in at the finish.

Slattery Wins U.S. Women’s 8-K Title

Sara SlatterySara Slattery of Lafayette, Colo., won today’s U.S. Women’s 8-K Championship in Akron, Ohio. For the 26 year-old athlete, who won the Pan Am Games 10,000m title in 2007, it was her first ever U.S. open title on any surface.

Slattery went for victory early, sharing the lead with race favorite Katie McGregor. They passed the first mile in 5:05, while a chase pack of eight women, including Amy Rudolph, Molly Huddle, Renee Metivier-Baillie and Lindsey Anderson, kept them in sight. On a gradual uphill in the sixth kilometer, Slattery eased away from McGregor and Metivier-Baillie, who had come up from the chase group, and found herself with a ten meter lead.

Goucher to Challenge McGregor at USA 10 Mile Championship in Minnesota

Section: News & Results, Road Racing

Kara GoucherOrganizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, which plays host to the 2008 USA Women’s 10 Mile Championship, announced today that Kara Goucher will challenge Katie McGregor for that title on Sunday, Oct. 5., in Minneapolis, Minn.

Goucher is back in training after doubling at the Beijing Olympics in the 5000 and 10,000 meters last month. She made the final in the shorter event, finishing ninth, and placed tenth in the longer event in a personal best 30:55.16. This will be her first 10 mile road race, but at last year’s Great North Run half-marathon in Newcastle, England, she hit the 10 mile mark in an unofficial 50:59 (she won the race in 1:06:57).

Interesting Possibilities in Tonight’s Women’s 10,000m Final

Posted June 27th, 2008 at 6:00 PM by David Monti

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics

kara goucher 2007 world championship bronze medalist osakaThe fan and media focus at tonight’s women’s 10,000m final at the U.S. Olympic Trials here is rightly on the event’s two top stars: American record holder Shalane Flanagan and last year’s IAAF World Championships bronze medalist Kara Goucher.

But, because the field has only four Olympic Games “A” standard holders, several other women are likely to be pushing the pace because it is their only hope of making it to Bejing. Unlike in previous Olympic years, U.S. athletes will not be allowed to register qualifying times after the Trials have concluded. Also, if a “B” standard holder should win the race, she won’t be able to earn a Beijing berth because the qualifying rules state that as long as there at least two “A” standard holders behind them in the field, those athletes will be nominated to the Olympic team ahead of the “B” winner. For athletes without the “A” standard going into tonight’s race, it’s do or die.

The four “A” standard holders — Flanagan, Goucher, Molly Huddle and Katie McGregor — have no incentive to push the pace, and it is unlikely that they will do much leading tonight. However, other strong athletes who need to make the standard tonight (31:45.00 or better), will have little choice but to make the race.
