Records continue to fall at The U.S. Olympic Trials. Jordan Hasay, 16, just ran 4:14.50 in the semifinal round of the women’s 1500 meters to break the national high school record.
Shannon Rowbury won the first heat in 4:11.75. She and Tiffany McWilliams (4:12.80) moved up front after the first lap. At 800 meters, McWilliams was in the lead in 2:16. She led through the bell lap, but was passed by Rowbury and Amy Mortimer (4:12.89) in the end.
There were two high schoolers in the second heat, Hasay and Christine Babcock (4:20.00). Babcock got out fast with Erin Donohue (4:13.01), but could not maintain the speed past the first lap. Christine Wurth-Thomas (4:12.66) took the lead at 500 meters. Wurth-Thomas, Donohue, Lindsey Gallo (4:12.54) and Morgan Uceny (4:13.61) went through 800 meters in 2:17.68 and finished in the same order. The real action was going on behind the top four women when Hasay moved from near the back of the pack to a fifth-place finish and new high school record.

Event Report: USATF Junior Track Championships

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, High School
This past weekend in Columbus, Ohio, 22 athletes punched their tickets to the World Junior Championships (pending meeting qualifying standards).
The marquee matchup of Friday was the men’s long jump, in which the champions of the two major high school indoor national championships, Marquise Goodwin (Rowlett, Texas) and Christian Taylor (Goodwin, Georgia) met up against each other. The former won with a national high school leading mark of 25′ 0″, while the latter lost out on the precious second spot to Fresno State freshman Gary Lee.
The performance of that day was in the men’s hurdles. High school junior Booker Nunley (Garner, North Carolina) beat two college freshmen by .41 seconds and tied the stadium record for the high school (39″) hurdles with 13.40. This ties for 8th on the all-time high school list, and the stadium record he shares with Miami Dolphins reciever & kick returner Tedd Ginn Jr.

Event Preview: USATF Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships

The USATF Junior Championships will be held this coming Friday through Sunday in Columbus, Ohio in Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. On the line is a trip to July’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. (No, I can’t pronounce that, either.) Yours truly, the Track & Field Superfan, will be on site for all three days.
The meet is open to all athletes who are teenagers for the entirety of the 2008 calendar year, and that means all high schoolers and many college freshmen. Unfortunately, USATF was caught in a scheduling bind–some of the biggest states (New York, Ohio and others) had late state championships, pushing Nike Outdoor Nationals a week later than usual, while the Olympic Trials caused the Junior championships to be held a week earlier, and the result is that the two meets are on the same weekend.

IAAF May Change Doping Rules
AP writer Raf Casert has reported that the IAAF is considering the possibility if changing its doping rules in the wake of the Trevor Graham trial. Olympic gold medalist Antonio Pettigrew admitted to having doped since 1997 which would have put him beyond the reach of the current IAAF doping rules. Current IAAF doping rules stipulate that retroactive sanctions can only go back 8 years.

Wariner Says Golden League Schedule Will Benefit Him
Defending Olympic 400m Gold Medalist Jeremy Wariner has mapped out an ambitious season for himself. He wants to win another gold medal or two (400m and 4×400m relay), break Michael Johnson’s 400m world record of 43.18 and, to top it all off, he wants to win the million dollar Golden League jackpot. He’s got his work cut out for himself, but, according to an article by the Press Association, the 24-year-old Waco, Texas resident believes the timing of the Golden League events will benefit him. “We felt it was a great opportunity to get some competitions in before then (the US trials and Olympics)… It will allow myself to prepare mentally and physically for both big contests.”

Shalane Flanagan and Dathan Ritzenhein each brought their “A” game to Mission Bay Park here today, running away with their first long-course U.S. Cross Country titles in commanding fashion.
Flanagan, who struggled with the high altitude in Boulder at last year’s championships where she was soundly beaten by Deena Kastor, jumped quickly to a five second lead after 2 km of the 8 km race, and expanded it with each lap. She was unrelenting, pressing all the way to the finish line to win by a whopping 70 seconds in 25:26.
“I had a blast,” said a beaming Flanagan who liked the grass course and the warm conditions. She added: “If we could have venues like this I would be coming every single year.”

USA Names Team for World Youth Championships

Section: News & Results, Track & Field
USA Track & Field named their team for the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships, scheduled for July 11 - 15 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Included in the roster of 16 boys and 15 girls is distance sensation, Jordan Hasay, the tiny sophomore from Arroyo Grande, Calif., who attends Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo. She will compete in the 3000m. Hasay, the U.S. junior cross country champion at only age 15, ran an impressive 10:07.65 for two miles at the Arcadia Invitational last April, splitting the 3000m in 9:26.9. It will be interesting to see how she fares against the top youth athletes from other parts of the world.
In order for an athlete to compete in the IAAF World Youth Championships, he or she must be 15, 16 or 17 on the last day of the year. The world youth record for 3000m for girls is a stunning 8:36.45 by Ma Ningning of China set in Jinan in 1993. Last year’s world leading time was also by a Chinese athlete, Liu Yingzhu, who ran 8:52.64 in Yantai.
