Gebrselassie Achieves First Sub-2:04 Marathon in Berlin

Haile Gebrselassie became the first man in history to break the two hour and four minute barrier when he won today’s real,- Berlin Marathon, shattering his own world record set on the same course one year ago. The 35 year-old Ethiopian, who now owns the three fastest marathon times in history, clocked 2:03:59 under sunny skies accompanied by comfortably cool temperatures (10°C to 12°C).
“I’m so happy,” Gebrselassie told race organizers immediately after the race. “Everything was perfect, the weather, the pacemakers. Two weeks ago, I had a little problem, I ran 20-K 40 seconds faster than in my preparation last year. But I had some cramps, and missed a week’s training. I started again a week ago, and had some doubts today, but in the end, everything was fine. This really is my lucky city.”
It was Gebrselassie’s third victory at Berlin, and he won €130,000 in prize money and time bonuses (USD 190,000) in addition to an undisclosed appearance fee. He lowered his previous standard of 2:04:26 by nearly half a minute.

In Boston Cheruiyot Defends & Tune Wins Dramatic Sprint

Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot won his fourth Boston Marathon and Dire Tune her first in a memorable 112th edition of America’s oldest and most historic marathon race.
Cheruiyot, the 29 year-old Kenyan who is the reigning World Marathon Majors champion, made a run at his own course record, leading a pack of six through the half-way in a brisk 1:03:07. Compatriots James Kwambai and James Mwangi Macharia joined him along with Moroccan Abderrahime Bouramdane and Ethiopians Kasime Adillo and Tesfaye Girma.
“As usual the course was very difficult and I tried to push harder this year to achieve my personal goal of running a 2:07,” said Cheruiyot.

Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot has won the 112th Boston Marathon in a blistering time of 2:07:46. It is his third consecutive Boston victory and fourth overall, matching the legendary Bill Rodgers. Cheruiyot used a brisk early pace and a monstrous surge in the Newton Hills to pull away from the field and run unchallenged to the finish. He fell just short of his of 2:07:14 course record (set in 2006) but still earned a convincing victory. With the win, the inaugural World Marathon Majors champ likely clinched a spot on the Kenyan Olympic marathon team this summer.
Several other men took advantage of the outstanding conditions and boisterous crowds to post incredible times. Morocco claimed the next two spots with Abderrahime Bouramdane finishing second in 2:09:04 and Khalid El Boumlili claiming third in 2:10:35. Ethiopians Gashaw Asfaw and Kasime Adillo rounded out the top 5 in 2:10:47 and 2:12:24, respectively. 2004 champion Timothy Cherigat finished sixth in 2:14:13 and was followed by countrymen Christopher Chebioboch (2:14:47), James Kwambai (2:15:52), and James Koskei (2:15:52). American Nicholas A. Arciniaga rounded out the top 10 with a stellar 2:16:13 finish.

The 112th Boston Marathon has become a showdown between Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and the clock as he continues to attack his own course record. He has built a 30 second lead through 35k on Abderrahime Bouramdane who is himself having a fantastic day. Kasime Adillo and James Kwambai are in third and fourth, well back of the top two.

Robert K. Cheruiyot has taken charge of the 112th Boston Marathon, surging away from the lead pack near the 18 mile mark and quickly gapping the field.
The Champ looks strong and has a great chance to smash his own course record and serve notice to the rest of the world that he is ready for this summer’s Olympic Games. His last 5k was run in a remarkable 14:47 on hilly terrain. Behind Cheruiyot, Abderrahime Bouramdane and James Kwambai are staging an epic battle for second place while Kasime Adillo is trying to hold on.

LIVE at the Boston Marathon: Men hammering through half marathon mark

The lead pack has been whittled to six as the leaders are continuing their torrid pace through the half way point of the 112th Boston Marathon. The half was reached in 1:03:07, well under pace for the course record of 2:07:14 set by Robert Cheruiyot in 2006.
Cheruiyot and Moroccan Abderrahime Bouramdane have been taking most of the pacing duties in the last few miles. The course becomes more difficult in the next few miles, so the men will be tested as they roll towards Heartbreak Hill.

The men’s lead pack at the 2008 Boston Marathon is taking advantage of the course and conditions to push the pace and assault the course record.
Kenyans Lawrence Saina and Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot have taken many of the pacing responsibilities but the 17 man lead pack is still intact. The last 3 mile splits were 4:42, 4:46, 4:45 and the 15k split was 45:03.

LIVE at the Boston Marathon: Pace quickens for lead pack through 10k

The leaders of the men’s race at the 2008 Boston Marathon have taken advantage of the early downhills and favorable conditions to pick up the pace significantly. Their last three mile splits were 4:41, 4:49, 4:37 as the leaders are keeping the pace honest.
All of the main contenders are still in the 17 person lead pack, but Robert Cheruiyot and others have started asserting themselves with small surges, so look for the pack to thin out as they work their way to the halfway mark.

LIVE at the Boston Marathon: Cheruiyot in large lead pack after 5k

The men’s race at the 112th Boston Marathon is now underway in beautiful conditions (low 50s, sunny, little wind).
Three time champion Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot (Pictured) is in the lead pack at 5k along with 2004 champion Timothy Cherigat, last year’s runner-up James Kwambai, and many others.
The 5k split was a bit pedestrian (15:40) for runners of this caliber, but has started to pick up a bit as the last mile was run in 4:52. The next few miles are downhill, so look for the pace to quicken as the favorites assert themselves.
