IAAF World Athletics Final: Men’s 400m Hurdles

Although the men’s 400m Hurdles race was dominated by Americans with 5 in the race, Marek Plawgo of Poland was the upset winner in a photo finish. Both Plawgo and Kerron Clement, the World Champion at Osaka, recorded a time of 48.35. Here are the final results:

Clement dominates men’s 400m hurdles

Kerron Clement (Gainesville, Fla.) made good on his considerable talents in the men’s 400m hurdles Tuesday night, winning the event in impressive fashion at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships at Nagai Stadium.

The two-time USA and Visa Outdoor champion had to wait for his moment of glory. Upon taking their marks and entering the set position, athletes were called out of their blocks by the starter. On the second attempt at a start, Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic false started. The third time was the charm as the race finally got off cleanly.

USATF: 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Champs mark phenomenal successes

The 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track& Field Championships last month in Indianapolis were among the most successful in recent history.

The excitement of close finishes in the middle-distances, a packed house that provided loud encouragement to the athletes, and the fastest 100-200 double in history by Tyson Gay tell a compelling story. Television ratings, Website traffic and merchandise sales all saw significant rises over 2006. These were just a few of countless highlights.

In hard numbers, the meet measures up impressively:

0 - Number of stadium evacuations due to weather.

1 - The number of American records set (Breaux Greer, men’s javelin, 91.29m/299-6).

2 - Number of Visa Champions crowned (Tyson Gay and Tiffany Williams)

4 - Number of national television broadcasts of the meet (2 on NBC, 2 on ESPN2). NBC’s live coverage from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, won its time slot and was the #2 sports program of the day on network television. In aggregate, TV ratings for the meet saw a 144 percent increase over 2006.

The Golden League continues at Meeting Gaz de France in Paris

The women’s 400 meters and men’s 400m hurdles will be the most anticipated events at the second event of the IAAF Golden League, the Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis in France. The IAAF Golden League 2007 offers a $1 Million Jackpot, which represents international athletics’ biggest annual payday. Athletes must win at all six meetings to acquire at least a share.

• The women’s 400 meters will see a rematch of the 400 final from the U.S. Championships, as 2007 U.S. champion DeeDee Trotter is challenged by 2007 NCAA champion and 2007 U.S. runner-up Natasha Hastings, 2007 U.S. third-place finisher Mary Wineberg and 2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year, Sanya Richards. Richards is a contender for the Golden League Jackpot, having won the women’s 400m at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games, and is determined to win after her surprising fourth-place finish in Indy.

AT&T USA Outdoor T&F Champs: Carter wins Tyson Men’s 400m Hurdles

After a false start, the talented field that included 21-year old Kerron Clement and James Carter stayed close together for the first half of the race. However, James Carter then took lead on the straightaway and was able to to hold off a late challenge from Clement to take the national championship.

After crossing the finish line, Carter feel to the ground and his eyes teared up in joy. Carter and Clement’s times were the first and second fastest times of the year; both of whom will not be able to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka.

HEPTATHLON, Day Two

Key Athletes: GiGi Johnson, Hyleas Fountain, Diana Pickler, Jacquelyn Johnson

The past two USATF champions are in the field with GiGi Johnson (2006) and Fountain (2005), but it is US list leader Pickler who topped the standings with 3,636 points after the first day. Fountain is 18 points adrift, with Johnson two more behind her. NCAA champ Johnson is fifth at 3,495.

DECATHLON, Day Two

Key Athletes: Tom Pappas, Paul Terek, Jake Arnold

Four-time U.S. winner Pappas, who leads with 4,394 points, is the defending champion and could tie Bill Toomey and Dan O’Brien for most U.S. titles in the event after the withdrawal of ‘05 world champion Bryan Clay. Arnold recently claimed his second NCAA title, scoring 8,215 for the victory, and is sxth after five events. Terek scored 8,134 to win at Desenzano on May 6 and is seeking his third Worlds team berth.

AT&T USA Outdoor T&F Champs: Thursday event previews

WOMEN’S STEEPLECHASE 1st ROUND, 4:15 p.m.

Key Athletes: Lisa Galaviz, Anna Willard, Lindsey Anderson

Galaviz, the defending champion, won the Belem GP race in May. Willard and Anderson recently placed first and second at the NCAA Championships. Willard won in 9:38.08, the current U.S. leader.

WOMEN’S 800 METERS 1st ROUND, 4:45 p.m.

Key Athletes: Alice Schmidt, Hazel Clark, Alysia Johnson

Two-time defending champion Clark, who has three USATF titles, headlines a talented field. Clark recently claimed the Reebok GP in 1:59.07. Schmidt is the current US leader at 1:58.75. Johnson won the NCAA title with the second-fastest collegiate time ever, 1:59.29. Another win for Clark would tie her with sister Joetta for most consecutive wins in this event.

TYSON MEN’S 800 METERS 1st ROUND, 5:05 p.m.

Key Athletes: Khadevis Robinson, Derrick Peterson, Nick Symmonds

Robinson and Peterson are both three-time USATF champions, with Robinson winning the past two titles. A three-time NCAA Division III champion and the 2006 USA runner-up, Symmonds posted a U.S.-leading time of 1:44.54 to win the Nike Prefontaine Classic while Robinson, who won the Reebok GP, was third in 1:44.99.

Stuczynski clears 16 feet, Gay flirts with WR at Reebok Grand Prix

Jenn Stuczynski became the #2 woman on the all-time list in the women’s pole vault, while Tyson Gay came within a slight breeze of breaking a world record Saturday night at the Reebok Grand Prix. A sell-out Icahn Stadium crowd of 4,990 fans from around New York and the world cheered performances in warm, muggy conditions.

Stucyznski soars again

Stuczynski became the first American to clear 16 feet in the women’s vault with her winning leap of 5.88 meters/16 feet, 0 inches to set her second American record and world leader in two weeks.

She broke Stacy Dragila’s 3-year-old American record on May 20 at the adidas Track Classic (4.84m/15-10.5). Two weeks later in New York, she had the bar set at 16 feet and took two solid tries that failed.

On her third attempt at the height, Stuczynski gave the bar a brush, but it stayed up, giving her the American record as well as the U.S. all-comers record. She then raised the bar to 6.03m/16-6 in an unsuccessful attempt to break Yelena Isinbayeva’s world record. Shuying Gao of China was second with a national and Asian record of 4.64m/15-2.75. Dragila withdrew from the competition with a sore left Achilles tendon.
