Kipyego Too Tough To Beat in Women’s NCAA XC Champs
Posted November 19th, 2007 at 6:00 PM by Bob Ramsak

From gun to tape, the women’s division of today’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships had only one leader: Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech. The junior from Kenya ran away from the field to defend her individual title in 19:30.9 (unofficial) over the 6 km course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Last year, Kipyego sprinted to the fore at the gun and never looked back. However, Kipyego was content to run most of the first mile with a lead pack this year that included three others: Colorado’s Jenny Barringer, the 2006 runner-up, Florida State’s Susan Kuijken, and Iowa’s Diana Nukuri.
Kipyego started to edge ahead on a long downhill just past the mile passing the 2 km in 6:26. Barringer, Kuijken, and Nukuri were only a second behind at the split before the field made their way up the course’s second long incline.
From that point on, Kipyego simply extended her lead over the chase pack — passing 4 km in 13:01, 11 seconds ahead of Barringer, Kuijken, and Nukuri.

The fast times continued on the final day of the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Sacramento’s Hornet Stadium, with new champions crowned in the men’s and women’s 800s and 1500s.
Mississippi State’s Golden Coachman took the pace out quickly in the men’s 800, passing 400 meters in 52.45 with Texas-San Antonio’s Larry Brooks and Michigan’s Andrew Ellerton (pictured) just behind, and Washington’s Ryan Brown — the 2006 outdoor and 2007 indoor champ — trailing towards the back of the pack as usual.
Coachman continued to lead through the 600 in 1:19.5 with Ellerton screaming around the final turn to take the lead for good and win in 1:47.48.

Alan Webb broke one of America’s older track records today at the 98th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 24 year-old from Reston, Va., destroyed the field in the men’s mile, clocking 3:51.71, an early world leader. Webb’s time easily eclipsed Steve Scott’s Drake Relays and Drake Stadium record of 3:55.26 set back in 1979 when Scott ran for the old Sub Four Track Club.
Blake Boldon was a distant second in 4:03.15.

WEEK 3 XC Rankings: Few Changes as Most Teams Rest For Next Weekend
Posted October 10th, 2006 at 3:05 PM by Martha Jones
Section: News & Results, Cross Country
There were very few changes in the Week 3 Cross Country Rankings because most teams took the weekend off. They did so in an attempt to better prepare themselves for next Saturday’s Pre-Nationals at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.
On the men’s side, there were literally no changes. Wisconsin remained #1 with Arkansas maintaining the subsequent rank.
There were a few changes for the women, although Stanford stayed at the top for a third straight week. The most notable changes was Iowa dropping from 8th to 11th.
Colorado (2) and Michigan (3) switched spots from last week’s rankings. Arkansas, North Carolina State, BYU, Princeton, UC Santa Barbara, Wisconsin and Providence filled the 4-7 spots.
For complete rankings, go to theofficial USTFCCCA Division I site.
