1. Valerie Vili, 74
2. Nadine Kleinert, 46
3. Nadzeya Ostapchuk, 43
4. Misleydis Gonzalez, 41
5. Meiju Li, 34
6. Anna Omarova, 31
6. Chiara Rosa, 31
8. Christina Schwanitz, 30
9. Kristin Heaston, 29
10. Cleopatra Borel-Brown, 26

Kiwi Vili dominated the indoor circuit and picked up right where she left off in a late-May meet held in the Beijing Olympic stadium. Ostapchuk has only competed three times this year and Kleinert didn’t do much indoors, otherwise they would be further ahead of the other throwers.

meseret defar with flag3000 meters
(includes no-pacemaker championship-type 5k races)
1. Meseret Defar, 68
2. Meselech Melkamu, 42
3. Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet, 38
4. Tirunesh Dibaba, 38
5. Gelete Burka, 35
6. Ejegayehu Dibaba, 32
7. Kim Smith, 28
8. Olga Komiagina, 26
9. Ruth Bisibori Nyangau, 26
10. Grace Momanyi, 21

World Indoor champion Defar is still the best at this distance, but hasn’t yet run against her rival, 5k world-record-breaker Tirunesh Dibaba.

World Points Standings:
Women’s Middle Distance

Posted June 16th, 2008 at 11:09 AM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Rankings, World Standings

800 Meters
1. Pamela Jelimo, 88
2. Yelena Soboleva, 57
3. Maria Mutola, 43
4. Maryam Yusuf Jamal, 40
5. Liliana Popescu, 39
6. Tamsyn Lewis, 35
7. Lucia Klocová, 34
8. Kenia Sinclair, 33
9. Tatyana Petlyuk, 32
10. Jennifer Meadows, 29

Jelimo’s sudden dominance is jaw-dropping; three races in the 1:54-1:55 range plus another 1:58 (without a pacemaker and at a mile-and-a-half of altitude). Soboleva’s indoor campaign was so good that she ranks second on the strength of just two meets. Supervet Mutola is the best of the rest; milers Jamal and Popescu are using the 800 as tune-ups (and doing very well at it). Lewis is proving what I thought back in March, which is that her World Indoor Championships win was a lucky fluke.

1. Reese Hoffa, 71

6. Garrett Johnson, 32
7. Rutger Smith, 31
8. Ryan Whiting, 28
9. Scott Martin, 28
10. Peter Sack, 26

Hoffa has a slight lead over Cantwell and Nelson, and these three are head and shoulders above the rest of the world. Cantwell missed Sunday’s Prefontaine Classic with an arm injury; in his absence, Nelson won with the second-longest throw of the year.

World Points Standings:
Men’s Jumps

Posted June 14th, 2008 at 10:00 AM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Rankings, World Standings

High Jump
1. Yaroslav Rybakov, 56.5
2. Stefan Holm, 56
3. Andrey Silnov, 49.5
4. Ivan Ukhov, 42
5. Andra Manson, 33
6. Jesse Williams, 30
7. Dusty Jonas, 29
8. Kabelo Kgosiemang, 29
9. Linus Thörnblad, 26
10. Kyriakos Ioannou, 23

World Indoor champ Holm and world list leader Rybakov are neck-and-neck. Silnov’s win last Sunday at the Prefontaine Classic tightened his grip on third. As I type this, Nebraska’s Dusty Jonas is competing in the NCAA championships, which would move him into fourth if he wins as expected.

World Points Standings:
Men’s Hurdles

Posted June 13th, 2008 at 11:00 AM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Rankings, World Standings

liu xiang and david oliver race in the 110m hurdlesOver the last two days I’ve rolled out my World Points Standings for the men’s sprints and the middle & long distance events. We continue with the various barrier events:

110m Hurdles
1. David Oliver, 73
2. Joel Brown, 54
3. Liu Xiang, 42
4. Dayron Robles, 38
5. Ryan Wilson, 24
6. Anwar Moore, 23
7. Allen Johnson, 22
8. Antwon Hicks, 21
9. Andy Turner, 20
10. Thomas Blaschek, 20

As is usual, the USA dominates this event with six of the top ten positions. Oliver is clearly the dominant hurdler of the early season, but expect Brown to come back to the pack fairly quickly. Xiang’s recent problems (injury in New York, false start in Eugene) have kept us from finding out how good he really is right now. Robles dominated the indoor season but has raced only twice outdoors, losing to Oliver by just 0.01 in Berlin.

World Points Standings:
Men’s Sprints

Posted June 11th, 2008 at 12:00 PM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Rankings, World Standings

Usain BoltMy rankings are being run on a pilot program this summer and I’m sharing them with the track community via The Final Sprint. Last year I did a trial run on just the men’s 100 meters and it correctly predicted the World Championships medalists in order, and then by the end of the summer readjusted to match Track & Field News’ world rankings nearly exactly.

The system is based on that of the IAAF’s World Athletics Tour standings, but with a few twists–most importantly, all kinds of meets are included in the standings and athletes can earn bonus points for fast times. At this early time in the season, athletes are given points for the results of their best four meets (one of which can be in a different event).

100 meters
1. Usain Bolt 46
2. Nesta Carter 42
2. Olusoji Fasuba 42
4. Kim Collins 38
4. Mike Rodgers 38
6. Darrel Brown 34
6. Tyson Gay 34
8. Derrick Atkins 32
8. Michael Frater 32
10. Ivory Williams 30

Dibaba Smashes 5000m
World Record in Oslo

Posted June 6th, 2008 at 10:00 PM by Bob Ramsak

Section: News & Results, Announcements, Track & Field

tirunesh dibaba brussels belgiumTirunesh Dibaba made her first outing of the summer a memorable one after breaking the world record in the 5000m at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games in the Norwegian capital.

For the second straight year, the Oslo meet played host to a new women’s standard in the event. This time around, it was Dibaba smashing the record that her compatriot Meseret Defar smashed last year.

This is a very joyous day for me today,” said Dibaba after her stunning 14:11.15 performance which eclipsed Defar’s performance by more than five-and-a-half seconds. “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and this is a very special day for me.”
