USATF Convention Opens on an Optimistic Note

With his books in the black and 26 medals (14 gold) won at last August’s IAAF World Championships in Athletics, USATF CEO Craig Masback was riding high as he strode the podium to give his State of the Sport address at the opening session of the USATF annual convention here.
Reminding the 800+ attendees that their organization was $3,000,000 in debt back in 1997 when he took charge of the Indianapolis-based governing body, Masback said today that his organization was sitting on a significant reserve fund and was “poised to use our power to make a difference.”
Indeed, under Masback’s guidance the United States has minted global stars like Allyson Felix and Tyson Gay, Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards, Bernard Lagat and Alan Webb and Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi. He called athletics “the world’s best sport,” and thanked the federation’s members for their hard work and support to make the United States the world’s #1 track team.

On Eve of Title Defense, Kiplagat in “Right Mood”
Posted October 13th, 2007 at 4:45 PM by Bob Ramsak
Section: News & Results
When she sets out to defend her World Road Running title on Sunday, Lornah Kiplagat will be also be aiming to join some fine company.
Counting the now discontinued World Half Marathon Championships, only Kenyan Tegla Loroupe and Great Britain’s Paula Radcliffe, both three-time winners, have managed to defend their road running titles. And the Kenyan-born Dutchwoman, all around one of the finest road runners ever, is optimistic about joining that illustrious pair.
“Everything is going normally and everything is going well,” said Kiplagat, who last year lowered the world record in the 20km to 1:03:21 with her victory in the first edition of the reconstituted championships in Debrecen, Hungary. “I’m in the right mood going into the race. I’ve spent the last week in Italy, so it could be a good result.”
Kiplagat followed up with an overwhelming victory at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa last March, and is now on the rebound from a minor calf injury that sidelined her from the World Championships on the track in Osaka in August.

Kara Goucher teleconference excerpts from USATF
Posted October 3rd, 2007 at 3:35 PM by Jeanie Rebb
Section: News & Results, Marathons, Track & Field
USATF on Wednesday hosted a media teleconference with Kara Goucher, The 2007 World Outdoor Championships bronze medalist in the women’s 10,000m who on Sunday won the Great North Half Marathon in England.
Q: Tell us about your race this weekend.
A: It was something that was proposed to me to go run there after Osaka. My coach and I talked about it, and he said ‘I think you should do it. You’re prepared and there are no expectations.’ I came back to Portland for 7 days after I ran in Berlin. I did a long run, and I did a 9-mile tempo run. Heading into the race we thought I could handle 5:10 [mile pace], and then I kind of kept running.
Q: How far was your longest race prior to Sunday?
A: 10k was the longest.
Q: How did you find the distance?
A: I felt really comfortable and really relaxed. I felt like we were running fast - it wasn’t easy by any means. But I felt like my body was handling it, until the last two miles. The last kilometer was really, really hard. This is only my third road race. I ran the Providence 5k in 2005 and I ran the Tufts 10k last year. This by far was the most exciting. There were people everywhere, and they were cheering so loud, even though they did call me Paula [Radcliffe] the whole race.

IAAF Reports No Positive Drug Tests During Osaka
Posted September 21st, 2007 at 9:45 AM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Track & Field
The International Association of Athletics Federations reported today that there were no positive drug test results stemming from a massive testing program carried out during their recently concluded World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan. However, there was one positive result from an out-of-competition test executed at a team training camp.
“I am pleased to report that the testing programme in Osaka was the largest ever conducted by the IAAF with even more tests collected than we had initially planned,” said IAAF president Lamine Diack in a statement circulated to the media. “I can confirm that we have found only one positive case from the testing in Japan.”
