Battle of Kenyans in Fukuoka Marathon
Former marathon world-record holder Paul Tergat of Kenya will take on countryman Sammy Wanjiru at the 61st Fukuoka Marathon on 12/02/2007. Wanjiru, who lives in Japan and is the world-record holder for the half-marathon, will be running his first marathon. Fukuoka plays a role in the determination of Japan’s Olympic marathon team.Read more at: [IAAF]

Oeiras, Portugal Kicks Off 2007-2008 IAAF Cross-Country Season This Weekend
The first of 11 meets in the IAAF Cross Country Permit Series 2007/08 will take place this weekend in Oeiras, Portugal and will conclude on March 30th, 2008 in Fukuoka, Japan at the 36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships. The IAAF cross-country series is the pinnacle of cross-country and features the best harriers in the world.Read more at: [IAAF]

Despite the concerns raised by the tragic death of Ryan Shay at the U.S. Olympic Trials Men’s Marathon, a study released by Dr. Barry Maron of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation has found that “The risk of sudden cardiac-related deaths in marathon runners is ‘exceedingly small.’” Read more at: [Denver Post, CO]

Lehigh set to host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional XC Champs on Saturday

lehigh university mountain hawks logoLehigh will host the 2007 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday morning on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Division I men’s 10K race will start at 11 a.m., followed by the Division I women’s 6K race at 12:15 p.m. Goodman Campus will also serve as host to the Division III Mideast Regional, with the women’s 6K race starting at 1:15, followed by the men’s 8K race at 2:15.

The Division I men’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Georgetown (No. 14) as well as Patriot League champion American and Paul Short winner Villanova. The Mountain Hawks will send eight runners to the course, led by freshman Dan McClimon and junior Dan DeWitt.

The women’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Princeton (No. 4), West Virginia (No. 14), Georgetown (No. 20) and Penn State (No. 28). The Princeton women are also the winners of this year’s Paul Short Run, finishing ahead of West Virginia. The Brown and White will send nine runners to the course, led by junior Shannon Alejandro, who was named to the All-Patriot League first team.

This makes it a dream city for running, jogging, or walking. There is a massive foot-mobile population, so if you feel like a jog almost anywhere here you will rarely feel out of place.

However, wise choice of route always makes a run or jog more enjoyable and easier to embark upon and finish. For a training or recreational route to be motivating and enjoyable, the Fun on Foot model says it needs to have four attributes: Comfort from both the safety and underfoot perspective; Attractions to make it interesting; Convenience to city center and public transit; and a worthy Destination to help motivate you to finish the route.

In “Fun on Foot in New England” we applied this model to Greater Boston and came up with 13 excellent routes. Narrowing this down, here are the very best routes that are just too good for any outdoor exerciser to miss:
