On Episode 139 of TheFinalSprint.com Podcast, the most listened to running podcast in North America, I had the pleasure of being joined by Chris Derrick of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois.
In January Derrick was named the 2007-2008 Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. He also finished second behind TFS Elite Athlete BloggerMichael Fout at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships and most recently ran the fastest 5k ever (13:55:96) in a high school race at the Arcadia Invitational.
In the interview, Derrick talks about his recent successes and why he’ll head to Stanford this fall instead becoming an Illini. Download the podcast to hear Derrick discuss these topics, as well as, whether the current crop of elite high school runners (Derrick, Fout, Puskedra, Lowe, Fernandez, etc) could match the level of success already achieved by Hall, Webb, and Ritz, his answers to our new “Rapid Fire Questions” segment, and much more!
If your measure of success goes way beyond the mainstream, if you think limits are something to be pushed, if your greatest motivation is doing the impossible, we may have a career for you.
In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today announced Chris Derrick of Neuqua Valley High School (Naperville, Ill.) as its 2007-08 Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Derrick becomes the first student-athlete to win the award, since The Gatorade Company announced the addition of boys cross country to the Player of the Year program this past October.
The award, which recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Derrick as the nation’s best high school boys cross country runner. A national advisory board comprised of sportswriters and sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Derrick from more than 210,000 high school boys cross country runners nationwide. Derrick is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year Award, to be presented at a special ceremony the afternoon prior to The ESPY Awards in July. The new AquaJoe portable hydration system gives runners and active individuals a convenient solution for carrying their favorite powdered drink.
The concept is simple:
Fill the AquaJoe with the desired measure of powdered drink
Each AquaJoe holds up to 3 tablespoons of powder
Seal the AquaJoe to ensure no spillage during your activity
Just turn the scoop 180 degrees to seal
Clip the AquaJoe to your hydration pack or water bottle, or tuck into your backpack
The device weighs about 1 oz and is 6″ in length, making it very portable
Is compatible and works well with hydration devices (Fuelbelt, Camelbak, etc.) and Nalgene waterbottles.
When you need a new drink, just add the required concentration of powder to water.
This allows you to refill your water bottle and add powder several times during a single activity.
University of Florida’s Dr. Robert Cade, the professor who led the group that invented Gatorade, passed away today at the age of 80. Cade’s death was confirmed by The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun after speaking with his family. He reportedly died of kidney failure.
Gatorade has generated more than $150 million for the university since Cade and his fellow scientists developed the sports beverage and named it after the school mascot (The Florida Gator) in 1965.
In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today announced the addition of boys and girls cross country to its celebrated high school awards program.
The program recognizes athletic excellence in conjunction with high standards of academic achievement and exceptional character displayed on and off the field. One boy and one girl in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia will be honored as the Gatorade State Cross Country Runner of the Year from among more than 400,000 high school cross country runners nationwide.
From the pool of state winners, one boy and one girl will be honored as the Gatorade National Cross Country Runner of the Year — the nation’s best all-around high school student-athletes in their sport. RISE works with nationally-focused sport-specific experts to evaluate the athletic, academic and extra-curricular resumes of the 102 candidates. Each national winner becomes eligible for the program’s culminating honor — the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year award, presented at a ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July. Most of us are accustomed to sugared sports drinks - Gatorade, Powerade, Cytomax, and others. Although the sugars provide glycogen (energy) that can aid us during long runs, for many athletes it is “too much” and leads to stomach cramping and/or crashes in energy.
Ultima Replenisher electrolyte drink offers an alternative to traditional sugar-bearing sports drinks, and if you’ve had bad experiences with Gatorade, Powerade, or Cytomax, you may want to check it out.
Fatigue during hot-weather exercise is caused by lack of water, salt, sugar or calories. Of the four, exercisers are most ignorant of their sodium needs. A study from The University of Otago in New Zealand shows that taking a salty drink prior to competition can help an athlete to exercise longer and harder. (Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, January, 2007; and Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, January 2007).
Athletes who took the salty drink had larger blood volumes and greater endurance. Salt makes you thirsty earlier so you drink more, and salt in your body holds water so you have more water available to meet your needs. Read the rest of this entry »
As more Americans embrace a healthier lifestyle, the popularity of fizzy beverages continues to wane. Industry insiders even predict that the bottled water industry will overtake carbonated soft drinks within the decade.
This news bodes well for flavored, vitamin-enhanced water makers like PepsiCo. In 2006, PepsiCo introduced SoBe Life Water to the market, a naturally flavored lifestyle water chock full of the vitamin B complex, and antioxidant vitamins C and E. According to the National Cancer Institute, antioxidants like vitamins C and E protect cells from the damage inflicted by free radicals. The cancer fighting agents in SoBe Life Water make it worth the $1.39 price tag.
Designed to help you live a healthier life, SoBe Life Water comes in five tasty and refreshing flavors that our testers found enjoyable: Strawberry Kiwi, Pomengranate Cherry, Blackberry Grape, Orange Tangerine, and Passionfruit Citrus.
