deena kastor after winning 2007 usa xc champsIn conditions so windy that water was blowing onto the course between the 5 km and 6 km marks, Andrew Carlson and Deena Kastor (Pictured) captured the U.S. 15-K road running titles this morning in Jacksonville, Fla., at the 31st Gate River Run.

Carlson was the big winner as he and three other men were able to catch Kastor who, along with the other elite women, were given a five minute headstart. Carlson won not only the $12,000 first place prize but an additional $5,000 bonus for winning the gender battle. He crossed the finish line about 25 seconds ahead of Kastor. It was Carlson’s first U.S. title at any distance on any surface, and he waited for Kastor at the finish line and congratulated her with a hug.

Kastor Could See Sizeable Payday in Jacksonville Tomorrow

Section: News & Results

deena-kastor-2007-boston-marathonDeena Kastor could see a sizeable payday at tomorrow’s Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Fla., which serves as the U.S. 15-K championships for both men and women.

Already the U.S. record holder for 15-K (47:15), Kastor will be looking for her sixth title in Jacksonville, worth $12,000. However, she may pick up an additional $5000 should she finish ahead of the first man (the elite women are given a five minute headstart). That seems likely given that the men’s field is not as strong as in previous years.

The award, presented by the Running Network, recognizes excellence in race directing.

“We had one of the largest fields of candidates in years,” said award coordinator Jeff Darman in a prepared statement.

Ingalls is only the second race director of the Boilermaker. He took over from race founder Earle Reed in 1998 and in his seven-year tenure has grown the Boilermaker to become the second largest 15-K race in the United States with 10,882 finishers in 2007 (the Gate River Run was the largest 15-K with 11,326 finishers).

Deena Kastor ready for rematch with Prokopcuka and Jeptoo at Boston Marathon

Jelena Prokopcuka Deena Kastor NYC Marathon 2006Finishing sixth at last November’s ING New York City Marathon was a bitter disappointment for Deena Kastor, the USA record holder for the distance.

She had prepared thoroughly for the storied race, but made a fatal tactical error when she did not respond to a mid-race breakaway by Ukrainian Tatiana Hladyr and Latvian Jelena Prokopcuka.

Kastor finished sixth in 2:27:54, more than eight minutes slower than her American record at London last April, while Prokopcuka went on to defend her New York crown and took the lead in the World Marathon Majors points chase.

But on Monday, April 16, at the 111th Boston Marathon, Kastor will get another crack at the Latvian, a gritty competitor who has won three of her last four marathons and finished second at Boston last year. Speaking via teleconference yesterday from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., Kastor said she is ready for the rematch.
