Fam Should Make Beijing Steeplechase Final An Honest Effort

anthony famiglietti 2008 beijing olympics steeplechaseAnthony Famiglietti wants a bronze medal in Beijing. He has stated that he can’t do any better than that because so many of the other athletes are cheaters.

Even so, he’ll most likely have to get a huge PR in the Beijing men’s steeplechase final. Of the 15 men in the final, Fam is ranked only 12th, both in season’s best and in PR. He may even have to set an American record to get on the medal stand. Since Dan Lincoln’s AR is 8:08.52 and Fam’s PR is only 8:17.34, that would be an improvement of 8.52 seconds for him. But even that may not be enough.

Most Favorites Advance in Men’s Steeplechase Qualifying

Anthony Famiglietti 2007 USA Men's 8k ChampionHighlighted by a front-running performance by American Anthony Famiglietti (Pictured), most of the medal favorites made it through this morning’s qualifying round of the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

Running in heat 2, Famiglietti immediately burst to the front, and within three laps had amassed a nine second lead. Although he was caught by the chase pack on the final water jump, led by Sweden’s Mustafa Mohamed and Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemboi, he sprinted strongly over the final barrier and finished third in a personal best 8:17.34.

“There’s more heart in there,” said Famiglietti told Race Results Weekly after the race. “I just have to get it to come out.”

Famiglietti Breaks Penn Relays Record

Anthony Famiglietti 2007 USA Men's 8k ChampionThe 114th Penn Relays kicked off last night at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field with a rousing performance in the men’s steeplechase by American Anthony Famiglietti.

The 29 year-old Olympian ran 8:24.24 to break the meet record and take down the Franklin Field record of 8:24.86 set by James Munyala of the University of Texas - El Paso at the 1976 NCAA Championships.

Mt. SAC Relays: Distance Carnival Highlights

Anthony Famiglietti 2007 USA Men's 8k ChampionThe 50th Annual Mt. SAC Relays are underway this weekend in Walnut, Calif. The meet includes top high school, collegiate and professional track and field athletes. The Relays began Thursday, April 17, and will conclude Sunday, April 20.

Friday’s exciting Distance Carnival and Invitational was covered live on Flotrack and the Mt. SAC website. The highlights of the evening were the men’s invitational 3000-meter steeplechase and the women’s invitational 5000-meter run.

Anthony “Fam” Famiglietti
won the steeplechase with a time of 8:26.94, barely missing the meet record of 8:26.6 set by Marc Davis in 1993. He led the race from the starting line and finished ten seconds ahead of runner-up Jordan Fife’s finish time of 8:36.69.

Running at home, Famiglietti hopes for fast time

Anthony FamigliettiWith only about two kilometers separating his home from Ichan Stadium on Randall’s Island, Anthony Famiglietti said today that being able to race on his practice track truly provided the comforts of home.

“The feeling is more of comfort,” said the 28 year-old artist and steeplechaser who will compete in the 5000m at Saturday’s Reebok Grand Prix.

During the week when he goes out to the stadium to practice, he has the entire place to himself. He said that he may see a staff member once in a while, but that’s it. The chance to perform with the stands full of spectators, including his grandparents who live in the Bronx, is providing him with extra motivation.
