Ethiopians, BAA, Shoe4Africa Win Big at Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Races in Boston, MA

Blustery winds, blue skies, and temperatures in the lower 50s created the quintessential New England cross country backdrop for the 782 finishers in Sunday’s Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Races, presented by adidas and the Boston Athletic Association, and directed by USA Track & Field (New England Association) and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with Boston Centers for Youth and Families.
Westchester (New York) Track Club repeated its feat from last year, sending both the male and female champions to the winner’s circle, and Aziza Ayilu – an Ethiopian residing in the Bronx – became the first female to win back-to-back since the legendary Lynn Jennings successfully defended her title in 1994-’95.

Is the World catching
up to the Kenyans?

With headlines such as “Current Crop of Runners Not Up to Task” and “Change Tact[ics] Or Sink”, recent articles published by Kenyan journalists have been harshly critical of Kenyan distance running. Among other concerns are that Ethiopian and Eritrean athletes are closing the gap. But are these reports accurate?
Not according to statistical evidence, which shows that Kenyan running is as dominant as ever – if not more so. I broke down the statistics into all the middle-distance and all the long-distance performances from 1997-2006. I grouped all elite (world-class) performances for middle-distance (800m, 1500m, Mile, 3000m and 300m SC) into one chart and all elite performances for distance (5000m, 10000m) into another chart. I also broke it down even further, analyzing the top 100 performances of all time for both the middle-distance and the distance categories.
The Kenyans have dominated both the middle-distance and the distance categories, both in the elite and the top 100 of all time performances. In fact, in the middle-distance category, Kenyan runners have run more top 100 all time performances tham the rest of the world combined.

NY Times: Gebrselassie to race in Nike NYC Half-Marathon

The New York Times is reporting on their website that double Olympic gold medalist, Haile Gebrselassie, will be running the NYC Half-Marathon presented by NIKE on Sunday, Aug. 5. It will be the Ethiopian’s first ever race in New York City, and event organized by the New York Road Runners.
“I’ve been there many times,” he told veteran reporter Frank Litsky in a telephone interview from his home in Addis Ababa. “I know the roads in Central Park. I haven’t run in the New York City Marathon, but I was there to watch it three or four years ago. I’m running the Berlin Marathon this year because I won it last year, but maybe New York in the future.”

Gebrselassie sets sights on Berlin, world-record

After running 2:05:56 to clinch a first-place finish at the Berlin Marathon last year, Haile Gebrselassie will return to this year’s field and attempt another winning performance. No doubt intending to defend his title, the Ethiopian marathoner has his sights set on something more: a world record. While Gebrselassie currently holds the title of Berlin champion, the title of world champion has managed to escape him by mere seconds.
As the site of Gebrselassie’s personal best, Berlin has produced some of the marathons fastest finishes, most notable among them Paul Tergat’s world record 2:04:55 in 2003. Despite many attempts at the record, Tergat’s time—at least for now—remains unbeatable. This year however, Gebrselassie hopes to end the Kenyan’s four-year run as world record holder.
