Passport for the Track (and Running) Fan
Posted December 7th, 2008 at 7:23 PM by Jesse Squire
Section: Motivation
A little while ago I stumbled across ESPN’s Sports Passport, “the place to chronicle all the athletic events you’ve attended and recall the adventures, be they heartwarming or heartwrenching, or both.” ESPN invites the sports fan to “post the events and venues you’ve attended to earn Passport stamps and be ranked against other sports tourists, all while preserving your game-day memories”–because among sports fans, apparently everything is a competition.
It was tremendously dismaying to find that track & field (and cross country and road racing) are not among the ten sports the Passport lists. I guess I’ll just have to make my own low-tech version, and invite all of you readers out there in Internet-Land to play along in our Track & Running Passport.

ÅF Golden League Down to Two for Jackpot
Friday’s Zurich Weltklasse meet, the second-to-last event in the Golden League series, will have the remaining two athletes contending for the $1 million jackpot. Kenya’s Pamela Jelimo and Croatia’s Blanka Vlasic are undefeated in the series. Jelimo broke her own World Junior Record at the Beijing Olympics, while Vlasic suffered her only defeat in over a year. The meet, known as “The Olympics In One Night” due to the strength of the competition, will be carried on ESPN Classic on Friday afternoon. IAAF
Catherine Ndereba Confirms She Didn’t Know She Was Behind
Her agent tells Runner’s World’s Amby Burfoot that she lost sight of eventual marathon champion Constantina Tomescu-Dita when she made her break, and excessive security kept the information from being relayed to her. She never tried to close the gap because she thought her group was leading the race. Runner’s World
Coach deserves Texas-sized blame for Games
In a searing editorial, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette lays blame for Olympic disappointments at the feet of head coach Bubba Thornton due to his forcing legend John McDonnell off the US staff. That McDonnell was the coach at Arkansas while Thornton is at rival Texas had nothing to do with their analysis, of course.

The Week in the Rear View: Racing News May 19-25, 2008
Posted May 26th, 2008 at 12:00 PM by Jay Hicks
Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Columns, Olympics, Week in Rear View
This is my first of what will be many weekly columns wrapping up the goings on in track and field. I am normally found at PreraceJitters.com, writing about the fast life of track and field.
This week the Trevor Graham trial had the full attention of track and field. So far, the trial has been a train wreck. Angela Heredia testified how he gave multiple drugs to Marion Jones before the 2000 Games. Antonio Pettigrew testified under oath that it was EPO and HGH that allowed him to run sub-44 seconds. Consequently, Pettigrew’s testimony puts the 4×400 meter relays teams of the 2000 Olympics and 2001 World Championships in jeopardy of losing their medals. Dennis Mitchell took the stand and testified Graham injected him twice with HGH. Jerome Young also testified that he took banned drugs.
On the track, Liu Xiang flew over the 110 hurdles in 13.13 at the warm up meet held at the Bird Nest in Beijing before the Olympic Games. The time marks Xiang’s fastest of the season, and the second fastest time run overall this year.

ESPN, Nightline & GMA to Air Special Features, Present New Evidence in the Oscar Pistorius Controversy on April 15
Posted April 9th, 2008 at 4:00 PM by Adam Jacobs
Section: News & Results, Motivation, Track & Field, Columns, Olympics, SPOTLIGHT
One of the most talked-about sports stories of the past year is the controversy surrounding Oscar Pistorius, the bi-lateral amputee sprinter who is trying to make a bid for the Olympics and is appealing the IAAF’s ruling that he has a technical advantage. Ossur, the maker of those Cheetahs, invites everyone to form their own opinion based on new information as presented by ESPN’s E:60, Good Morning America, Nightline, and ESPN Magazine.
Looking for insights into this game-changing issue that raises scientific, ethical and philosophical questions, and for the past three months, ESPN’s investigative journalists have traveled the globe to learn more. They interviewed Oscar, his family, coach, prosthetist, friends, competitors, lawyers, and Ossur, too. They also interviewed Professor Bruggemann, the German doctor who originally tested him on behalf of the IAAF.
What to see on April 15th:
- Good Morning America will air a segment between 7-9am
- ESPN’s E:60 will broadcast a 10-minute feature between 7-8pm.
- Nightline will look into the story at 11:30pm.
In addition, ESPN Magazine’s April 21st cover story will delve into Oscar’s case.
