Phillips defends LJ title, Gay goes for another gold on Thursday

Dwight Phillips will try to win his third straight world long jump title, while Tyson Gay goes for his second gold of the Championships during Thursday competition at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Nagai Stadium.
The 2003 and 2005 world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Phillips (Snellville, Ga.) looked very strong in Wednesday’s qualifying round in the men’s long jump. He’s joined in the final by 2005 USA outdoor champion Miguel Pate (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and 2002 World Junior bronze medalist Trevell Quinley (Sacramento, Calif.).
Tyson Gay (Fayetteville, Ark.) will try to complete a 100-200 double achieved previously by Maurice Greene and Justin Gatlin when he competes in the men’s 200m final with teammates Wallace Spearmon (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Rodney Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.).
2007 Visa Champion and 2007 world leader Tiffany Williams (Columbia, S.C.) competes in her first women’s 400m final.

World’s best to compete at 33rd Nike Prefontaine Classic

Many of the world’s finest track and field athletes, including Jeremy Wariner, Allen Johnson, Asafa Powell, Michelle Perry, Bryan Clay, Reese Hoffa, Walter Davis, Maria Mutola, Bernard Lagat, Kenenisa Bekele and Liu Xiang, among many others, will compete Sunday at the 2007 Nike Prefontaine Classic at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The fourth event of USA Track & Field’s 2007 Outdoor Visa Championship Series, the Nike Prefontaine Classic will be televised live on NBC, Sunday, June 10, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Lagat, Webb to continue rivalry in Bowerman Mile
As always, the headline event of the Nike Prefontaine Classic is the Bowerman Mile, which this year features nine runners with lifetime mile bests under 4-minutes. The Hayward Field and Prefontaine Classic record of 3 minutes 49.92 seconds set six years ago by Hicham El Guerrouj could be in jeopardy.

Phillips headlines long jump field at Nike Prefontaine Classic

World and Olympic champion Dwight Phillips will take on a strong field - including the world’s top jumper in 2006 - in the men’s long jump at the 33rd Nike Prefontaine Classic, held at the University of Oregon’s historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
The fourth event of USA Track & Field’s 2007 Outdoor Visa Championship Series, the Nike Prefontaine Classic will be televised live on NBC, Sunday, June 10, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Others to keep an eye on include Panamanian standout Irving Saladino, who ended the 2006 season ranked #1 in the world after winning 15 of 17 competitions. Also look for reigning U.S. Outdoor champion Brian Johnson, 2005 U.S. Outdoor champion Miguel Pate, reigning world indoor and outdoor triple jump champion Walter Davis and 2005 World decathlon champion Bryan Clay.

Moore steals the show at Modesto Relays

Hurdler Anwar Moore posted a career best performance and the fastest time in the world this year Saturday at the 66th Coca-Cola Modesto Relays in Modesto, Calif.
A 28-year-old graduate of St. Augustine College, Moore won the race in 13.12 seconds, which betters the previous fastest time in the world this year by world record holder Xiang Lui of China, who clocked 13.14 earlier Saturday at the Osaka Grand Prix. Moore’s previous career best time of 13.23 was set at Modesto in 2005.
