Gay, Powell Clash Set for London Grand Prix 7/25 - 7/26

An eagerly anticipated 100m face off between World champion Tyson Gay of the U.S. and world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica has been set for the Aviva London Grand Prix on July 25-26, organizers announced.
With both sprinters gearing up for the Olympic Games, the race at London’s Crystal Palace will likely be their only face-to-face prior to Beijing.
“London will be very crucial for me,” said Gay, who last year stormed to World titles at both the 100 and 200m in Osaka. “It is one of the biggest meets of the year right now and that is where it is going down between myself and Asafa. He has the title of being the World record holder and I have the title of being the World champion, and I think that is really good for the sport.”

Asafa Powell sets 100m World Record of 9.74 seconds in Rieti

Section: News & Results, Track & Field
Asafa Powell broke the world record for 100 meters today, clocking 9.74 seconds in Rieti, Italy.
Powell, 24, eclipsed the 9.77 mark he produced on three occasions, and a record he shared with Olympic champion Justin Gatlin.
Powell set the record in his first solo race since his disappointing third place finish at the World Championships in Osaka late last month. There, he finished behind American Tyson Gay and Bahamian Derrick Atkins, a distant cousin of Powell’s. Gay went on to capture gold in the 200 and as a member of the U.S. 4×100m relay squad.
Although he faltered in the 100 meter final in Osaka, admitting that he panicked as Gay closed in on him, Powell’s speed was evident later in the week in the 400m relay, where he brought the Jamaican quartet from fourth to second during his sizzling anchor leg.

Tyson Gay Wins 100m Gold Medal in 9.85

Tyson Gay came from behind to beat Asafa Powell and win the gold medal in the world championships. Powell had a terrific start, but Gay remained relaxed and began reeling in Powell at 40m. Powell lost his composure and tightened in the last half of the race. By the time they hit the tape, Derrick Atkins had also overtaken Powell for the silver medal. Powell would have to settle for the bronze, leving doubts about Jamaican sprinters’ ability to handle a multiple-stage championship format. Gay, coming from the NCAA ranks, was used to handling 4 races in three days.
Gay is now going for a second gold medal in the 200m Dash and possibly a third gold medal in the 4×100m relay. The relay medal is not a certainty by any means, this being the weakest U.S. 100m team ever, Walter Dix having chosen not to compete due to his focus on his studies at Florida State University. Trindon Holliday also stayed home, focusing on the upcoming football season at LSU.

Wariner, Vlasic move up to
No. 3 All-Time in Stockholm

Jeremy Wariner underscored his dominance in the men’s 400m after his blistering 43.50 victory at the DN Galan Super Grand Prix in Stockholm tonight.
Wariner, the reigning world and Olympic champion and still just 23, won by nearly a full second over fellow American Kerron Clement (44.48, personal best), to move up a notch on the all-time world list, tying American Quincy Watts as the third fastest in history. Only world record holders Michael Johnson (43.18) and Butch Reynolds (43.29) have run faster.
Wariner’s effort was one of several outstanding performances at what was the finest single-day meet of the season.

Powell-Gay clash unlikely prior to Osaka
Posted July 12th, 2007 at 9:28 AM by Bob Ramsak
Section: News & Results, Track & Field
A much anticipated clash between 100m world record Asafa Powell and rising star Tyson Gay is unlikely until the two meet at next month’s World Championships, Powell said today.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen before Osaka,” said Powell, the 24-year-old Jamaican whose 9.77 world record has stood since 2005. “I don’t plan on racing much before Osaka and I haven’t heard about anything being planned.”
Powell returns to the track at tomorrow night’s Golden Gala Kinder+Sport meet in Rome, the third stop of the six-meet IAAF Golden League series, where he’ll contest the 100 meters. Powell has a season’s best of 9.94 from the ExxonMobil Bislett Games one month ago.
A groin injury sustained during the Jamaican championships forced Powell to sit out last week’s Golden League contest in Paris, but after running a relay leg in Lausanne on Tuesday, Powell said he’s ready to return.

adidas Track Classic: Gay wins 100m in 9.79 seconds
Posted May 20th, 2007 at 5:42 PM by Adam Jacobs
Section: News & Results, Track & Field
Just moments ago, in the 100m final, Tyson Gay was able to easily sprint to the win in 9.79 seconds.
Gay, the astounding young American, topped Michael Johnson’s 100m time last summer. He got off to a great start today and the rest of the field never had a chance.
If Gay keeps this up, there is nothing that can prevent him from breaking the world record at some point this season. Gay’s victory also placed him atop the Visa Championships Series standings, followed by Wallace Spearmon.
Derrick Atkins and Steve Mullings finished second and third, respectively.
Although Maurice Green holds the American and meet record, he showed today that he has a long way to go in order to succeed with his comeback and pursuit of an Olympic gold medal in Beijing. Green was unable to qualify for the 100m final; finishing last in his heat with a time of 10:84.
