Team USA: Day 5 Track Recap

On Day 5, Team USA steps it up and earns more medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

DAWN HARPER WINS GOLD MEDAL IN WOMEN’S 100M HURDLES

Team USA’s Dawn Harper dominated the field in the women’s 100m hurdles race, finishing in 12.54 seconds. Behind her, Australia’s Sally McLellan earned the silver medal, finishing in 12.64 seconds. The bronze medal went to Priscilla Lopes-Schliep of Canada, who also finished in 12.64 seconds. Team USA’s Damu Cherry finished in 4th place (12.65 seconds).

Lolo Jones
, a favorite to win the race, unfortunately did not have her race in Beijing. Jones finished in a disappointing 7th place (12.72 seconds) after a slow start and then hitting the 9th hurdle.

RICHARDS EARNS BRONZE MEDAL IN WOMEN’S 400M FINAL

Team USA’s Sanya Richards won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m final, finishing in 49.93 seconds. Ahead of Richards were Christine Ohuruogu (GBR) and Shericka Williams (JAM), who finished in 1st and 2nd places respectively. Ohuruogu won the race in 49.62 seconds, and Williams finished in 49.69 seconds–a personal best.

U.S. stars invade Shanghai

Shanghai golden grand prix 2007 logo iaafTeam USA standouts Tyson Gay, Sanya Richards, Jeremy Wariner, Michelle Perry, Allen Johnson and Lauryn Williams will lead an accomplished group of U.S. stars Friday at the 2007 Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in China.

This third edition of the Golden Grand Prix in Shanghai has been designated as a qualifying event for the IAAF / VTB Bank World Athletics Final 2008. Competing athletes at the meet will have the opportunity to get an early start on qualifying for next year’s final, to be held September 13-14.

Current world and U.S. men’s 100m and 200m champion Tyson Gay will compete in the 100 meters in a field that includes fellow Americans JJ Johnson and Marcus Brunson. The men’s 110m hurdles also should prove interesting as four-time world champion Allen Johnson and 2007 World Outdoor Championships bronze medalist David Payne do battle with world record holder and reigning world and Olympic champion Liu Xiang, who will compete in front of an enthusiastic hometown audience.

AT&T USA Outdoor T&F Champs: Powell defeats Perry to repeat in 100m hurdles

virginia ginnie powellAmong the top competitors in today’s 100m hurdles were defending champion Virginia “Ginnie” Powell, Dawn Harper, LoLo Jones, Michelle Perry (the reigning world champion), and Gail Devers protege Danielle Carruthers.

After an uncustomary false start by Michelle Perry, Powell and Perry blasted out of the blocks. Topping Perry (12.72), Powell once again became the U.S. 100m hurdle champion (12.63) Jones finished third in 12.79.
