Chicago Marathon Ambulance Lost On the Way To Hospital
Posted October 24th, 2007 at 5:40 PM by Jimmie R. Markham
Section: News & Results, Marathons
The ambulance crew that transported a Chicago Marathon participant who had suffered a heart attack while on the course and eventually died got lost on the way to the hospital. The runner, 35-year-old Chad Schieber was in cardiac arrest but autopsy reports reveal that he suffered from mitral valve prolapse, a condition that is rarely dangerous.
Here’s how it played out:
1. The suburban (Niles, IL) crew that was called in to assist during the marathon obviously was not familiar with the area.
2. The the hospital was only 6 blocks away. Unfortunately, the ambulance driver went the wrong direction for two blocks before doubling back. He still couldn’t find the emergency entrance of the hospital he was going to, the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, so he took the patient to the the West Side Veterans Administration Hospital a few blocks away.

Tucson Marathon Offers Discount To Chicago Runners
Posted October 22nd, 2007 at 11:23 AM by Jeanie Rebb
Section: News & Results, Marathons
Due to unseasonably high heat and humidity in the Mid-west over Columbus Day weekend, many competitors in the 2007 Chicago Marathon were unable to complete the event, or compete to the best of their ability. It is unfortunate that so many athletes did not realize their goal at a world-class, elite event such as the Chicago Marathon
Due to these circumstances, race officials for the Tucson Marathon Events have decided to offer a $10 discount to all competitors who registered for this year’s Chicago Marathon. This offer is valid through November 22, 2007 and can be applied on-line through www.active.com using a special discount code. Please send an email to request additional details: info@dreamchaserevents.com
The Holualoa Tucson Marathon will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2007 and is run along the base of the Santa Catalina Mountain Range in beautiful southern Arizona. Known for its point-to-point, fast, downhill course, the event is certified by USATF and is a Boston Marathon qualifier, with qualifying times being good for two years. The Tucson Marathon typically sees around 1,200 competitors and is run concurrently with the Damascus Bakeries Half Marathon and the Jim Click Marathon Relay.

The Road Race Management Race Directors’ Meeting has added a mini forum titled: “Issues Relating to the Recent Chicago Marathon” to their schedule for Saturday, Nov. 10.
Prior to this session they will discuss the role of a race spokesperson, which will touch on some of the issues generated by the extreme heat at Chicago, but the extra allotted session will afford additional time to discuss, digest and exchange views about what happened in Chicago, why it happened, and the reactions of the participants, the public and the media.

Video: Questions linger about 2007 Chicago Marathon

A number of questions still remain from the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon despite the recent autopsy report which determined that the heat was not responsible for the tragic death that took place last Sunday.
Although inside sources have reported that Chicago’s Olympic bid is only in ‘3rd place’, the Windy City’s Mayor Daley feels otherwise. Either way, and as CBS 2’s Chief Correspondent reports, few believe that recent complaints about the marathon will thwart Chicago’s Olympic hopes.

Chicago Marathon ‘07:
By the Numbers . . .
Posted October 7th, 2007 at 7:50 PM by Jimmie R. Markham
Section: News & Results, Marathons
Today’s LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon was both a thrilling and tragic event. Here’s a look at the 30th edition of the race by the numbers:
It was Chicago’s slowest men’s finish time in 12 years (1995 winner, Ritva Lemettinen (FIN) finished in 2:11:18), continuing a trend set by a majority of the year’s World Marathon Major events (Haile Gebrselassie’s world record of 2:04:26 in Berlin being the lone exception thus far in 2007). See the chart below to compare finish times over the last decade.
One runner tragically died during the race. Several news agencies have reported that the deceased was a 35 year old man named Chad Schieber of Midland, Michigan. He was pronounced dead, presumably from heat-related causes, shortly before 1 p.m. at a Veteran’s Affairs hospital, the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
250 people were taken to the hospital for heat-related ailments.
Almost 10,000 of the 45,000 registrants did not start the race because of the heat.
At 88°F, it was the hottest (and most humid) Chicago Marathon in history. The previous race-day high was 84°F in 1979.
Less than 0.05 seconds separated men’s winner Patrick Ivuti from runner-up Jaouad Gharib. It was the closest finish in the Chicago Marathon’s 30 year history.

Chicago Marathon ‘07: Berhane Adere comes from behind to earn second consecutive championship!
Posted October 7th, 2007 at 11:35 AM by Jeremy Sussman
Section: News & Results, Marathons, Special Features, Live Race Coverage
Berhane Adere has done it again; winning her second consecutive LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon title in dramatic fashion.
In uncharacteristically warm conditions, the women’s marathon field came down to the defending champion and a debut marathoner. Berhane Adere, from Ethiopia came into the race looking to repeat last years win and make up for her sub par, 10th place performance in London this year.
After early leaders Kathy Butler, from Great Britian, and Nuta Olaru, from Romania, fell off the pace, Alevtina Ivanova, from Russia took over the lead. Ivanova stayed at the front through 20 kilometers before Adere took over the lead by the half way mark.
While Ivanova stayed on the pace, a new comer to the marathon, Adriana Pirtea, from Romania, was also quietly sitting on their shoulders. Adere was able to drop Ivanova, but Pirtea continued to stay on her shoulder. Pirtea made her move just after 22 miles and put 20 - 30 meters on Adere within a few seconds.
She increased her lead to around ten seconds and came into the home stretch waiving her hands, not realizing that Adere had come back and was making a mad sprint for the finish. Completely unaware that she was about to be defeated, Pirtea continued to celebrate until, at the last minute, she viewed Adere passing her for the win. Adere finished in 2:33:49 and Pirtea in 2:33:52.
Kate O’Neil was the first American women to cross the line in 2:36:15. She was third place overall. Liz Yelling was fourth in 2:37:14, followed by Benita Johnson, of Australia, in 2:38:30.
The slow times were due to the temperature that reached as high as 87 degrees.
Official Times:
1. Berhane Adere 2:33:49 5:51
2. Adriana Pirtea 2:33:52 5:52
3. Kate O’Neill 2:36:15 5:57
4. Liz Yelling 2:37:14 5:59
5. Benita Johnson 2:38:30 6:02
6. Nuta Olaru 2:39:04 6:04
7. Paige M Higgans 2:40:14 6:06
