Runners to Battle Heat Again in Chicago

For the second year in the row runners will have to confront much higher than normal temperatures at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
At 7:00 AM CST, one hour before the start, the temperature is 61° (15°C) with 75% humidity. Local forecasters say that the high temperature for the day will reach 81°F (27°C), but that will be in the late afternoon. When the professional men finish just past 10h00, temperatures will be about 68°F (20°C) with 67% humidity, accompanied by bright sunshine.
Organizers had to shut down the race last year when temperatures soared over 80°F, and the race ran out of drinking water. Race director Carey Pinkowski has dramatically beefed up the event’s aid stations to deal with potentially warm weather, and his preparations will definitely be tested today. Making his job that much tougher is the relatively high percentage of first-time marathoners who are attracted to Chicago’s flat course and open embrace of charity groups.

Could Seven be Njenga’s Lucky Number at Chicago?

Section: News & Results, Marathons
Daniel Njenga is one of the most successful athletes in the 31-year history of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The gentle Kenyan has given the best years of his career to the race, running it six consecutive times and never failing to make the podium. He’s been second three times, third three times, has broken 2:08 five times, and set his 2:06:16 personal best here in 2002.
But victory here has stubbornly eluded him, and after last year’s race where he finished third he openly wept in the post-race press conference. In the final stages of the race, he was dropped by Patrick Ivuti and Jaouad Gharib, and Ivuti went on to narrowly defeat Gharib in a wild sprint finish. Njenga was crushed.

Dita Looking to Charge Ahead in Chicago

At yesterday’s kick-off press conference for the 31st Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Olympic Marathon champion Constantina Dita was introduced to the assembled media by 2004 Olympic Marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor. When Dita rose to speak at the podium, reporters also rose to give her a standing ovation, something rarely seen at this kind of gathering.
Dita, her blue eyes beaming and just a little misty, looked at race director Carey Pinkowski seated next to her.
“He’s a great person,” she said of Pinkowski who looks noticeably trimmer than last year. “I think he’s training more because he’s more skinny.”

Bank of America Chicago Marathon: Men’s Preview

Section: News & Results, Marathons
The 2008 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will feature an impressive assembly of Kenyan distance talent. Even with stars such as Sammy Wanjiru, Martin Lel, and Robert Cheruiyot recovering from their Olympic build up, Kenya will have 10 men with sub-2:10 credentials in this race. Only one other entrant (Japan’s Arata Fujiwara) has run that fast, so the winner will almost certainly come from Kenya.

On the side of experience are reigning Olympic champion Constantina Tomescu-Dita and two-time defending Chicago champion Berhane Adere, both of whom have remarkable credentials and are in fine form. They will be challenged by relative newcomer Bezunesh Bekele and several other talented women looking to prove themselves on this big stage.
