Nick Symmonds elite athlete blogI freaking love the outdoor season. After a long, cold, and wet winter / early spring comprised of boring days filled almost entirely with training, the track season comes and we get to finally see our hard work pay off. I got to see a bit of this over the last two weeks as I opened up my outdoor season in Philadelphia and Palo Alto.

Going out to the Penn Relays wasn’t originally in the plans but Coach Gags and I thought it would be a good idea to get a nice effort in before my first 1500m. Also, Penn is the most exciting place to race and nothing like it will get you as pumped up for an upcoming season. I ran a 1200m in a U.S. DMR [Distance Medley Relay] and was very pleased with my performance. I basically decided to treat it as a workout and just ran it as hard as i could. In doing this I split 2:51.1 and found out that I am really really strong right now! I was able to give my USA team a good lead but we were unable to finish that way and the Kenyans won (yet again!).

Breaux GreerBreaux Greer has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after breaking his own American record Sunday at the adidas Track Classic at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

A seven-time U.S. champion, Greer opened his competition with a throw of 90.71 meters/297 feet 7 inches, to smash his previous American record of 87.68m/287-8 that was set in 2004. For his effort, Greer was named the Visa Athlete of the meet and became the ninth-best performer of all time globally.

Another notable performance at the adidas Track Classic was turned in by 2006 U.S. Outdoor champion Jenn Stuczynski, who surpassed the American record in the women’s pole vault with her clearance of 4.84m/15-10.5. The previous record of 4.83m/15-10 was set in 2004 by 2000 Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila.

Defar to chase 2 mile world best in Carson on May 20th

Section: News & Results, Track & Field

adidas track classic logo 2007 Meseret Defar, the world record holder in the 5000m, will be looking to add the world best over the 2 Mile to her growing list of achievements at the adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif., on May 20.

The Olympic 5000m champion, Defar, still just 23, will be chasing the 9:11.97 best set by Regina Jacobs in 1999. The mark by Jacobs equates roughly to an 8:31.00 performance over 3000m, well within the capabilities of the young Ethiopian, who earlier this year lowered the world record indoors to 8:23.72, while her outdoor best over that distance is 8:24.66 set last summer in Stockholm.

The men’s 3000 field is filling as well, currently featuring Irishman and University of Arkansas alum Alistair Cragg, the 2005 European indoor champion, and American Anthony Famiglietti, a 2004 Olympian in the steeplechase and this year’s national 8-K champion.
