Seven of the top 10 women in the world over 100 meters - including the last three World champions - are expected to toe the starting line at the adidas Track Classic Sunday, May 18 organizers announced Wednesday.
The adidas Track Classic is the second stop on USA Track & Field’s 2008 Outdoor Visa Championship Series. It will begin at 12:30 p.m. on May 18 at The Home Depot Center, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, and will be broadcast live on ESPN from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. PDT (4 p.m.-6 p.m. EDT).
The women’s 100m race will be a rematch of the top four finishers from the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, won in a photo finish by Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown over silver medalist Lauryn Williams and bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter. Williams is the 2005 World Champion.

I spotted an interview titled “U.S. Olympic Team Media Summit Press Conference” that featured Brian Clay, Walter Davis, Lashinda Demus, Allyson Felix, Reese Hoffa, Carmelita Jeter, LaShawn Merritt and Terrence Trammell and it left me scratching my head for a minute. Since the US Olympic Track & Field team has yet to be determined, I thought this might be an error.
I dug a little further and discovered that the USOC’s media machine is acting a bit presumptuously, billing their 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Media Summit as “a preview of the 2008 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams that will be competing in China.” The USOC member who wrote the article does go on to call the athletes who attended the conference “hopefuls” but, still, it is a bit misleading, to say the least. Sure, all of the athletes who were interviewed are indeed favorites to make the team, but they haven’t made the team yet.

With wins in 11 of 16 events, Team USA dominated Team World Monday evening at USA vs. the World at the Run for the Dream at the Save Mart Center, located on the campus of Fresno State University in California. Scored as a dual meet, Team USA won 96-66.
Three-time Olympian Amy Acuff won the women’s high jump with her clearance of 1.95 meters/6 feet 4.75 inches. After three near-misses at the Indoor American record, Acuff was named Visa Athlete of the Meet for her efforts. 2005 NCAA Outdoor champion Sharon Day was second with her clearance of 1.90m/6-2.75.
After one false start and one call back, 1996 Olympic gold medalist and four-time 110-meter hurdle champion Allen Johnson led the men’s 55m hurdles wire-to-wire to win the race in 7.14 seconds. 2001 NCAA Indoor champion Aubrey Herring was second in 7.27.
Reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Reese Hoffa [Pictured] stole the show in the men’s shot put with his winning heave of 21.06m/69-1.25. 2007 U.S. Outdoor runner-up Dan Taylor was the runner-up with 19.99m/65-7.

Hayward Field Track “Fastest in the world”
Hayward Field, the site of next year’s Olympic Track & Field Trials, has a new track surface, one that has been “designed to be the fastest track surface in the world.” Some specs of the new Benyon BSS 2000 surface: “It features maximum return of energy and superior shock absorption, courtesy of a bio-engineered force reduction layer of butyl rubber and full-depth color polyurethane, which allows for daily training without stress injuries. The track is finished with a custom-made surface consisting of embedded Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) granules, which allow for advanced traction.”

Mysteries of Trail and Track Etiquette Revealed
An article in the Tallahassee Democrat (FL) reveals some of the mysteries of track and trail etiquette. Apparently, running newbies have not learned some of the basics, such as jogging in the outside lanes so that faster runners can have the inside lanes for interval training. Sanya Richards closed out her European season in style Sunday, winning the women’s 400 in the second and final day of competition at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany.
Richards continued in her impressive string of world-leading wins in the women’s 400. Coming off world leaders in the last three Golden League meets, Richards dropped another WL on Sunday with her time of 49.27, tying her winning time from Berlin last Sunday. Novlene Williams of Jamaica was second in 50.12; American Mary Wineberg was seventh in 50.73.
World champion Brad Walker continued his excellence in the men’s pole vault. As the only person in the field to clear 5.91m/19-5.75, Walker topped the rest of the field by 5 cm. American Jeff Hartwig placed sixth in the field with 5.70m/18-8.25.
World Outdoor bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter posted her second big win of the season, taking the women’s 100 in 11.10, with Osaka 200m gold medalist Allyson Felix second in 11.15 and World Outdoor 100m silver medalist Lauryn Williams fifth in 11.31. Jeter also won the 100 in Berlin last Sunday.

A slew of sensational performances, topped by Dayron Robles’ 12.92 victory in the 110m hurdles, highlighted a thoroughly entertaining second and final day of the 5th IAAF/VTB Bank World Athletics Final in Stuttgart this afternoon.
Continuing his impressive late season campaign, the 20-year-old Cuban slashed the year-old meet record set by Liu Xiang, leaving thoughts of “what might have been” had the Chinese world record been here to defend his title. It was also a personal best and national record for Robles –he ran 13.00 here last year– in this his fifth victory in as many races since his disappointing fourth place showing at the World Championships in Osaka. Robles is now tied as the fourth fastest hurdler in history.
American David Payne, the Osaka bronze medallist, was second in 13.08, ahead of Osaka silver medallist Terrence Trammell (13.15).

Carmelita Jeter, bronze medalist at Osaka, wasn’t going to have to worry about gold medalist Veronica Campbell (JAM), Campbell deciding to have ended her season. Silver medalist Lauryn Williams was still in the race, though, as was 200m world champion Allyson Felix.

The women’s 400 meters and men’s 200m will be the events to see Friday, September 14, at the fifth event of the IAAF Golden League, the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, Belgium. The IAAF Golden League 2007 offers a $1 Million Jackpot, which represents international athletics’ biggest annual payday. Athletes must win at all six meetings to acquire at least a share.
2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year Sanya Richards will run the women’s 400m Friday in a field that includes 2007 U.S. third-place finisher Mary Wineberg, 2007 World Outdoor silver medalist Nicola Sanders of Great Britain and bronze medalist Novlene Williams of Jamaica. Richards is the only American left standing in the hunt for the Jackpot.
Richards’ only competition in the hunt for the Jackpot is the world-record holder in the women’s pole vault, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia. They are the only athletes to have taken victories at all four meetings of 2007 - Oslo, Norway (15 Jun), Paris, France (6 Jul), Rome, Italy (13 Jul), Zürich, Switzerland (7 Sep).

The 2006 IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Sanya Richards is now the only American alive in the hunt for the Golden League Jackpot after winning the women’s 400 meters Friday at the fourth meeting of the six fixture series, the Weltklasse Zürich in Switzerland. Athletes must win at all six meetings of the IAAF Golden League series to claim a share of the $1,000,000 Jackpot.
2005 World Outdoor silver medalist Sanya Richards destroyed the field in the women’s 400m, winning in a world-leading 49.36 seconds. Novlene Williams of Jamaica was a distant second in 50.85 while reigning World champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain was fourth in 51.32 and Mary Wineberg was sixth in 51.53.
2006 NCAA 100m and 400m champion Xavier Carter (Pictured) stole the show in the men’s 200m, winning in 19.92 seconds ahead of 2007 World Outdoor silver medalist Usain Bolt of Jamaice, who took second in 20.19. J.J. Johnson finished fourth in 20.49 while Rodney Martin was fifth in 20.53.
Reigning World Outdoor 1,500m and 5,000m champion Bernard Lagat continued his winning ways today in the men’s 3,000m.
