Who is the worse gas guzzler? You or your car?

1999 Saturn SL-1I’ve often wondered, who is the worse gas guzzler, you or your car?

My dependable 1999 Saturn SL-1 according to the Marketplace Fuel Survey Data (read the full story here), gets about 52 miles per gallon highway, and about 32 miles per gallon city driving with air conditioning and traffic.

Let’s take the human body for example.

Recently, I had no choice but to eat at McDonalds during a business trip. I had 2 Egg-Sausage-Cheese-McGriddle sandwiches for breakfast and a meduim orange juice. That’s about 1270 food Calories (or kCal) and it cost me $7.28. Here is the breakdown:

  • each Egg-Sausage-Cheese-McGriddle sandwich: 530 Calories, 44g Carbs (47%), 20g Protein (21%), 29g fat (31%)
  • Medium Orange Juice: 210 Calories, 17g Carbs, 0g Protein, 0g fat

If you add the 3 items above, that’s 55% Carbs, 18% Protein, and 26% Fat! No wonder North America has an obesity problem!

Since an average human body burns about 100 kCal per mile, whether you walk or run, that’s 1300 kCal for 13 miles.

Calories burned during exercise: Measure with METS

couple-biking.jpgTo help you determine how many calories you use during various activities, scientists recommend a common measure called a MET, the amount of energy you use when you sleep.

It comes out to about one kilo-calorie per kilogram of body weight, or one half a calorie per pound. For example, a 130-pound person burns 60 calories per hour during sleep. A 155-pounder uses 70 calories per hour.

When you ride a bicycle at 12 miles per hour, you are exercising at about ten METS or 10 times the amount of energy that you use during sleep.

Exercise for weight loss

weight-loss-layout_01.gifWhen people start an exercise program, some lose a lot of weight, while others lose nothing.

An effective exercise program for weight loss should be 1) continuous, 2) use all of your major muscle groups, 3) include one intense workout a week for each muscle group, and 4) be done on land, rather than in the water.

Stop-and-start exercises, such as lifting weights, do not require that you use your muscles continuously enough to burn a lot of calories. Those that use just one muscle group, such as doing situps or pushups, won’t help you to lose a lot of weight because the stressed muscle groups tire quickly so you can’t exercise very long. Sports+Music = Even Better Nokia 5500

Posted October 18th, 2006 at 8:00 PM by Adam Berger

Section: Gear & Apparel, Gadgets & Acces.

Nokia 5500 sports music editionThe Nokia 5500 Sport has been improved and dubbed the Music Edition by adding a 512 MB microSD card for up to 375 songs, a fitness carrying strap, bicycle holder, and sports headset wrapped in a energetic color.

The carrying strap allows the 5500 to be worn around the waist or strapped around an arm. The sports headset also offers handsfree convenience for music and conversations with an athletic, over-the-ear design. Tunes can be transferred to the handset from your PC via the Nokia Music Manager software.

Don’t forget about the integrated pedometer, telling you the distance travelled and calories burned during a run. Other activities, such as a cycling or cross-country skiing can also monitor distance and calories with an optional GPS accessory. Results of workout routines can then be transferred from the Nokia 5500 Sport Music Edition to a PC to follow individual progress (Can someone pleae say that the Nike+ has been a hit!).
