Brazil’s Marilson Gomes dos Santos returns as the defending champion of the ING New York City Marathon, a race in which he defeated a stellar field.
A superstar in his sports-mad country, he won the prestigious São Silvestre Road Race (over three-time Boston Marathon champion Robert Cheruiyot) on New Year’s Eve 2006 and established new Brazilian records over 5000 and 10,000 meters in one three-day span in June of that year. Gomes finished 10th in the 2005 IAAF World Championships Marathon; most recently, he was sixth in a personal-best 2:08:37 at the 2007 London Marathon.

After setting the U.S. women’s javelin throw record five times in 2006, four-time national champion and 2004 Olympian Kim Kreiner has done it again.
Kreiner threw 64.19 meters/210 feet 7 inches to win the javelin Wednesday in Fortaleza, Brazil. Her performance, which betters her previous AR of 62.44m/204-10, stands as the world’s leading women’s javelin throw mark this year.
The 2003 Pan American Games champion, Kreiner finished third at this event last year with a then American record toss of 61.78m/202-8. Kreiner will look to win her fourth consecutive U.S. title at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships next month in Indianapolis.
