The Boston Athletic Association has finalized their results for the 2007 Boston Marathon. The 111th edition of the race had total of 23,869 entrants (14,344 male and 9,525 female), 20,646 starters (12,570 male and 8,076 female) and 20,338 finishers (12,364 male and 7,974). Given the rainy and windy weather, the 98.5% finisher rate is noteworthy.
Also, in the elite women’s race, the woman who crossed the finish line in seventh place, Lyubov Denisova of Russia, has been disqualfied for failing an out-of-competition doping test in March. Therefore, all athletes in the women’s results are elevated by one place. The restated results for open and USA Championship athletes are as follows:
1. Lidiya Grigoryeva (RUS) 2:29:18 $100,000
2. Jelena Prokopcuka (LAT) 2:29:58 40,000
3. Madai Perez (MEX) 2:30:16 22,500
4. Rita Jeptoo (KEN) 2:33:08 18,000
5. Deena Kastor (USA) 2:35:09 14,000 + $25,000*

Athletes Overcome Wind, Rain and Cold at Boston Marathon

The weather was bad and the times were slow, but the Boston Marathon was nonetheless an exciting race which, for a short time last night, was on the brink of being canceled.
“I’m relieved that it worked out so well,” said Guy Morse, Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the event. Morse said the high winds, heavy rain and flooding at the starting area in Hopkinton were so severe last night that canceling became a possibility. But the rain tapered throughout the morning and, although conditions were still very windy, wet and cold, the world’s oldest annually contested marathon was able to be run for the 111th time.
CAUTIOUS WOMEN’S RACE DELIVERS EXCITING FINISH
The women’s field was one of the best assembled at Boston, led by defending champion, Rita Jeptoo of Kenya; two-time ING New York City Marathon champion, Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia; and last year’s fastest marathoner, Deena Kastor of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. It was Kastor’s Boston debut and expectations were high.

The chase for the inaugural World Marathon Majors Series championship heated up at the 111th Boston Marathon today as champions Robert K. Cheruiyot (KEN) and Lidiya Grigoryeva (RUS) each earned 25 points in the race for the $1 million prize purse. The champions battled the elements and strong fields to further their positions in the series and simultaneously establish themselves as the early leaders on the 2007-08 circuit.
Cheruiyot’s 2:14:13 victory marked his second consecutive Boston Marathon championship and third consecutive World Marathon Major win as he took first place at The 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon last October. The wins place him comfortably in first place for the championship with 75 total World Marathon Majors points.

Gilmore leads Americans to strong Boston finish

Peter Gilmore (San Mateo, CA) was the top American finisher in today’s 111th running of the Boston Marathon. Gilmore completed the course in 2:16:41, good for 8th place in a tough international field.
Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot won the race overall in 2:14:13 to take his third Boston Marathon title. The winning time was the slowest since 1977 as a result of the remarkably difficult weather.
This year’s Boston Marathon was particularly notable for its incredibly challenging conditions. The runners faced chilly temperatures, driving rain, and a stiff wind that made the last march up Commonwealth Avenue memorable. Gilmore handled the conditions admirably, sticking with the leaders until Cheruiyot and five others broke the race open around mile 20.

Kastor wins US Women’s Marathon Championship amidst blustery conditions

Section: News & Results, Marathons, Special Features, Live Race Coverage
The United States Women’s Marathon Championships were conducted as part of today’s 111th Boston Marathon. Olympic Bronze Medalist Deena Kastor (Mammoth Lakes, CA) claimed the title on the strength of her fifth place overall finish. Kastor completed the famous Hopkinton to Boylston course in a wind-blown 2:35:09.
Following Kastor was Ann Alyanak (Bellbrook, OH) in 2:38:55 and Kristin Price (Raleigh, NC) in 2:38:57. Rounding out the top 10 were Mary Akor (Gardena, CA), Christine Lundy (Sausalito, CA), Janelle Kraus (Pawtucket, RI), Zoila Gomez (Alamosa, CO), Melissa White (Rochester Hills, MI), Kelly Flathers (Huntington Beach, CA), and Dot McMahan (Rochester Hills, MI).
This year’s Boston Marathon provided a unique challenge to all runners through the extremely difficult weather conditions. With temperatures in the low 40s, strong rain, and gale-force winds the competitors had to fight not only their opponents but the elements as well. The last few miles along Commonwealth Avenue were especially trying, as a brutal headwind made a strong finish difficult. Undeterred, the American women persevered to place 8 runners in the top 15 overall led by Boston native Deena Kastor.
