Wins by Jamal, Sinclair the highlights in chilly Lausanne

Running in chilly conditions that dipped below 50 degrees F (9 C.), Maryam Yusuf Jamal and Jamaican Kenia Sinclair produced the chief highlights at the Athletissima Super Grand Prix in Lausanne tonight.
After a dismal 13th place finish in Paris last Friday, Jamal was clearly trying to illustrate a point 1500. Running before a supportive hometown crowd –the 22-year-old Ethiopian-born Bahraini has been based in Lausanne since fleeing Ethiopia in 2002– Jamal cruised to a front-running victory in 4:03.61. Never seriously challenged –she had a near four second lead at the bell– Jamal easily held off the late race charge of Ukraine’s Iryna Lishchynska (4:04.27) and Russians Olga Yegorova (4:04.64) and two-time world champion Tatyana Tomashova (4:05.48).
U.S. champion Treniere Clement briefly followed Jamal and pacesetter Olga Komyagina’s solid tempo, but paid for it dearly 800 meters into the race. Fading badly over the final lap and a half, she finished 22nd in the 23 woman field.

Webb’s 1500m win the Highlight in Paris

With a brilliant display of assertive racing, Alan Webb powered to a 3:30.54 victory in the 1500 this weekend to highlight the Meeting Gaz de France Paris-St. Denis; the second stop on the six-meet IAAF Golden League series.
Running aggressively from the outset, the 24-year-old three-time American champion never lost control of the race, despite the relatively brisk pace.
“I knew it was going to be hard,” Webb said, explaining his decision to run near the front from the gun despite the pre-race plan for a 2:47 split through 1200 meters. “I could have been in fifth place and it would have been hard.”

Men’s 1500 the key attraction as IAAF Golden League resumes in Paris

For the crowd of 65,000 that is expected to turn out for tonight’s Meeting Gaz de France, one event will stand head and shoulders above the rest –the men’s 1500, which features French star Mehdi Baala squaring off against American Bernard Lagat.
Baala, the world leader after his solo 3:31.05 in Strasbourg last week, apparently doesn’t mind the pressure. In fact, he added to it yesterday when declaring that he’ll be chasing his own national record of 3:28.98 set in 2003.
Lagat, who will be making his ninth straight appearance here, is pleased that the spotlight will be focused elsewhere.

Who is Cosimo Caliandro?

When he crossed the finish line with his arms raised up, almost everybody in the National Indoor Arena asked: “Who’s he?”
Italy’s Cosimo Caliandro was a stunning surprise winner yesterday at the 29th European Indoor Championships, taking the gold medal in the 3000m ahead of pre-race favourites Bob Tahri, Jesus Jesus España, Halil Akkas, Mo Farah, Alistair Cragg, and Gunther Wedlinger.

Chojecka poised for historic double at Euro Champs

With her convincing victory in today’s 1500m final at the 29th European Indoor Championships here, Poland’s Lidia Chojecka is poised to complete a historic double victory should she also win the gold medal in tomorrow’s 3000m. She is the defending champion in that event, winning gold in Madrid in 2005, and is definitely the favorite again this year for gold.
In today’s race, Chojecka (who pronounces her name Hoy-ET-ska), bided her time while Britain’s Helen Clitheroe set the pace for most of the race.
Indeed, Clitheroe led for the first five laps and ensured a relatively quick pace, passing the 1000m point in 2:46.02.
