USATF Release: Women’s Track & Field Committee Chair Stephanie Hightower was elected to a four-year term as USA Track & Field’s president Friday at the 2008 USATF Annual Meeting at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nevada.
A former-world class hurdler, Hightower succeeds two-term incumbent Bill Roe, whose eight years as USA Track & Field’s President will come to an end on Sunday, the final day of the Annual Meeting.
Hightower led the way after the first round of voting with 304 votes, with USATF Vice President Dee Jensen in second place with 263 votes and former USATF Vice President Bob Bowman in third place with 58 votes, which caused him to be eliminated.
In the afternoon runoff election, Hightower was the victor with 328 votes, with Jensen tallying 300 votes.

USATF Presidential Election: First-Round Voting Shows Jensen In-Line for Win

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics
According to first-round voting tallies that were leaked to Track & Field News, Dee Jensen would have won the election had Bob Bowman not run and should prove victorious after round two voting concludes at 6pm PST.
In the first round, T&FN Editor Garry Hill reported the following results:
Hightower: 304 / Jensen: 263 / Bowman: 58
With no candidate receiving more then 50% of the votes, the election has gone to a run-off between Stephanie Hightower and Jensen. Bowman was eliminated and endorsed Jensen. Several delegates who voted for Bowman in round one and spoke to TheFinalSprint.com on the condition of anonymity, said that Jensen was their second choice.
If every delegate who voted for Bowman now throws their support to Jensen in round two, the final results would be:
Jensen: 321 / Hightower: 304
Round two voting concludes at 6pm PST and the winner will be announced by 7pm PST.

The USA Track & Field Presidential Election is down to two …
Stephanie Hightower and Dee Jensen.
According to the USATF bylaws, when no candidate receives over 50% of the vote, the top two vote getters move on to a one-on-one runoff. In this case, Bowman received the fewest number of votes - eliminating him from contention. Bowman has now thrown his support behind Jensen.
The runoff between Hightower and Jensen will take place between 3pm and 6pm PST. The results will be announced by 7pm so stay tuned … in just a few hours we will know who the next USATF President will be for 2008-2012.

Part VII is the final installment in TheFinalSprint.com’s investigative series titled “Dysfunction Run Amuck: USA Track & Field and the Need for Change”. To catch up on the preceding installments, please use the links found at the bottom of this article.

USATF Presidential Election and the Need for Unity
As Doug Logan wrote in his blog on November 4th, “It takes cooperation and vision for a diverse NGB like USATF to come together and set a course for a better future.”
In order for Logan to succeed in setting that course, he will need a strong partner at the helm of the USATF Board of Directors. The next president, to be selected by the membership’s appointed delegates on Friday, December 5th, will likely have a major effect on the progress of the organization and on Logan’s ability to achieve his goals.
With the fate of the track federation hanging in the balance, delegates will be faced with a choice between three strong candidates for USATF President: Bob Bowman, Stephanie Hightower and Dee Jensen.

TheFinalSprint.com is set to release a new series of podcasts called TFS ElectionCast 2008: Interviews With The USATF Presidential Candidates. This series will introduce you to the candidates for president of the governing body of track & field in the United States: USA Track & Field (USATF). These podcasts will be published one per day on consecutive days this week (Tuesday - Thursday) and will feature our interviews with the three candidates, who are Bob Bowman, Dee Jensen and Stephanie Hightower.
We will ask all three candidates a series of questions, the intent of which is to allow USATF members and the running/track & field community at large to become better acquainted with the candidates and to help you make an informed decision as you prepare to vote for the next president. With the USOC’s demands for a restructuring of the USATF’s leadership and the decline in popularity of our sport in recent years, we are perhaps at the most critical juncture in the history of USA Track & Field. All three candidates will be asked the same questions and the interviews will be 100% non-partisan. This is all in keeping with our goal of making TheFinalSprint.com the premier destination for track & field, marathon, and road running enthusiasts.
