2007 Blue Planet Run Concludes in New York City

An historic around-the-world relay run reached its finish line today in New York City, marking the completion of an unprecedented three-month athletic endeavor that is raising funds to deliver safe drinking water to some of the 1.1 billion people who currently live without it.
The inaugural 2007 Blue Planet Run, an event made possible by the generous support of The Dow Chemical Company, ended at noon at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport.
The twenty original Blue Planet Run team members who circumnavigated the globe, and two alternates who joined the journey along the way, ran through a crowd of fans, family and friends who were gathered at the landmark New York City waterfront locale to celebrate with the group as it completed its epic 95-day, 15,200-mile expedition through 16 countries.
Beginning from the United Nations in New York City on June 1, the Blue Planet Run team has run relay-style 24 hours a day, seven days a week across Europe, Russia, Asia, Canada and the United States. The runners have endured some of the world’s toughest conditions, from swatting flies through the Gobi Desert to navigating city streets in Beijing to coping with the blistering summer heat of America’s heartland.
Along the way, the Blue Planet Run inspired people around the world to donate to the Blue Planet Run Foundation (BPRF), the non-profit group that organized the Run. Because of Dow’s support, BPRF dedicates one-hundred percent of the money raised to fund grassroots safe-drinking-water projects in rural communities.

Americans now have a new way to get to New York City and raise money and awareness for water projects around the world — at the same time.
Blue Planet Run Foundation’s online “Messenger Program” lets participants earn points by recruiting others to make donations to help fund projects that bring safe drinking water to the 1.2 billion people who live without it.
“Messengers” win prizes based on the number of points they accrue compared with other participants. The three “Messengers” with the most points by August 27, 2007, will each receive a trip for two to New York City to participate in the festivities for the Blue Planet Run finale at the South Street Seaport on September 4.
The top 1,500 Messengers will also receive genuine Blue Planet Run batons http://shop.blueplanetrun.org just like the one that the runners are carrying around the world.
(NOTE: Check back tomorrow for the latest episode of The Final Sprint Podcast featuring an interview with Mary Chervenak, one of the twenty-one courageous runners on the Blue Planet Run team!)

BLUE PLANET RUN: “Transforming plight
into possibility”

Section: News & Results, Columns, SPOTLIGHT
The Blue Planet Run will cover 15,200 miles, across 16 countries and 4 continents, 24 hours a day for 95 days to deliver an extremely urgent and important message:
We can and must begin today to alleviate the catastrophic burden placed on over a billion people who, every day, must drink unsafe local water, or travel long distances on foot to search for safe water for themselves and their families.
Starting in New York City on June 1, 2007, a team of “20 ordinary male and female athletes doing extraordinary things” will run around the clock along a route that includes the U.S., Ireland, the U.K., France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan and Canada. Each runner will sprint 10 miles a day. Batons will be passed at over 1,500 exchange points. The Run will end back in New York City, on September 4, 2007. Each exchange point and heartfelt moment will be captured in the media, fueled by well-organized events in major cities and an international PR campaign. The event will spare no expense to be Earth- and people -friendly. We imagine an event that comes to be known as “The Race without a Trace.” We are committed to partnering with corporations that have similar beliefs and goals.
