Hobbling home, Jevtic wins Belgrade Marathon

Belgrade-Banca-Intesa Marathon 2007 logoOlivera Jevtic, the 2006 European Championships silver medalist in the marathon, gave her home country fans something to cheer about today by winning the 20th Belgrade Banca Intesa Marathon for the first time. Unfortunately, she had to hobble to the finish on an injured ankle to do it.

She took the lead in the women’s race from the gun, running at a pace which would project a 2:30 finish. But the injury began to show later within the first half of the race, and her pace slowed markedly.

Belgrade Marathon Today

Belgrade-Banca-Intesa Marathon 2007 logoToday’s Belgrade Banca Intesa Marathon will feature home country favorite, Olivera Jevtic. The tall, 29 year-old Serbian is the national record holder for the distance, 2:25:23, and also the reigning European Championships silver medalist.

“In order to be as prepared for marathon as possible, I spent last four week training in Kenya,” said Jevtic, who won the Serbian Sports Personality of the Year in 2006. “I have very fond memories of Belgrade and I would love to win and set the course record. It is my first marathon in front of the home crowd. I wanted to repay my debt to Belgrade marathon which took a great part in my success.”
