Antwon Hicks Named USATF Athlete of the Week

USA Track & Field LogoAntwon Hicks has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s 60-meter hurdles Saturday at the 2008 Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The 2005 NCAA Outdoor 110m hurdle runner-up, Hicks out-leaned 2005 U.S. Indoor champion Joel Brown at the finish to win the Reebok men’s 60m hurdles in 7.59 seconds to Brown’s 7.61. For his victory, Hicks was named Team USA Athlete of the Meet, Presented by Visa.

Josh McDougal named USATF Athlete of the Week

Josh McDougal Liberty UniversityJosh McDougal has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Monday, November 19 at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

A senior at Liberty University, McDougal out-kicked Galen Rupp of Oregon in the men’s 10 km race in a thrilling homestretch battle, crossing the finish line in 29 minutes 22 seconds.

Rupp finished just one second behind in 29:23. McDougal is the first Liberty athlete to win an NCAA Cross Country title.

Teresa McWalters named USATF Athlete of the Week

teresa mcwalters stanford university cardinalsTeresa McWalters has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s NCAA West Regional title Saturday in Eugene, Ore.

A senior at Stanford, McWalters won the individual title, covering the 6 km course in19 minutes 57.30 seconds. Her victory led the Stanford women to the team title with 33 points over Oregon, who came in a distant second with 76 points.

Now in its sixth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Ryan Hall named USATF Athlete of the Week

ryan hall winning 2007 olympic trials men's marathon in central parkRyan Hall has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men’s Marathon Saturday in Central Park in New York City.

The American record-holder in the half marathon, Hall tamed a difficult course in breaking the Olympic Trials record with his winning time of 2:09:02. He ran the first half of the race in 1:06:17 and the second half in 1:02:45. The previous record of 2:10:19 was set in 1980 by Tony Sandoval.

Now in its sixth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Curtis named Athlete of the Week

Bobby CurtisBobby Curtis has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the 2007 Big East Cross Country Championships Saturday at the E.P. `Tom’ Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

A senior at Villanova University, Curtis won the men’s 8 km title in a course-record 23 minutes, 8.85 seconds to win the individual title for the second time. He also captured the 2004 crown with a time of 23:26 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.

Abdi Abdirahman named USATF Athlete of the Week

abdi abdirahman at 2006 usa outdoor track & field championshipsAbdi Abdirahman has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning his third USA Men’s 10 Mile title in a row Sunday at the Medtronic Twin Cities 10 Miler in Minneapolis, Minn.

A two-time Olympian, Abdirahman dominated the men’s 10 mile race, crossing the line in an event record of 47 minutes 34 seconds. He made his move during the mostly up-hill third mile and as he passed eight miles, was up by more than 80 meters and was able to cruise the last two miles to the State Capitol.

Kara Goucher named USATF Athlete of the Week

kara goucherKara Goucher has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the Great North Run Half Marathon Sunday in north east England.

The 2007 World Outdoor 10,000m bronze medalist, Goucher made her half marathon debut a memorable one in setting a new American best time of 66 minutes 57 seconds. Her time bettered the previous U.S. record of 67:34 by Deena Kastor set last year in Berlin, but due to the downhill nature of the course, it will not qualify as the American record.

Goucher posted splits of 47:36 (15 km), 50:59 (10 miles), and 63:33 (20 km), which are quicker than any U.S. competitor has run before. With her performance, Goucher spoiled the return to competition after a 21-month absence of British world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe, who was the runner up in 67:53.

Sanya Richards named USATF Athlete of the Week

sanya richards head shotSanya Richards has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s 400 meters Sunday at the 2007 ISTAF Meeting in Berlin, Germany to earn her second consecutive share of the Golden League Jackpot.

The 2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year, Richards earned half of the million-dollar jackpot by going undefeated in the women’s 400 in Golden League competition. In the last meet of the series, she streaked to victory in the women’s 400m in a world-leading 49.27 seconds. Richards’ other Golden League wins came in Oslo June 15, Paris July 6, Rome July 13, Zurich September 7 and Brussels last Friday.

Raschker named USATF Athlete of the Week

Phil RaschkerPhil Raschker has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s 60-64 100 meters, 200m, 300m hurdles, high jump, triple jump, pole vault and heptathlon at the 2007 World Masters Athletics Championships in Riccione, Italy.

A 13-time Masters Female Athlete of the Year, Raschker has won every event that she has contested so far at the World Masters Athletics Championships. She won the 100m (14.00), 200m (28.61), 300m hurdles (52.27), high jump (1.33 meters/4 feet 4.25 inches), triple jump (9.46m/31-0.5), pole vault (2.65m/8-8.25) and heptathlon (6,742 points). In the final days of competition, Raschker also will compete in the long jump.

Felix and Lagat named Athletes of the Week

bernard lagat with american flag 2007 world championships osaka gold medal 1500mAllyson Felix and Bernard Lagat have been named USA Track & Field’s Athletes of the Week after Felix brought home gold medals in the women’s 200 meters, 4×100m amd 4×400m and Lagat won the men’s 1,500 and 5,000m at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan.

The 2005 World 200m champion, Felix defended her title with the largest margin of victory in World Championships history, striding to the gold medal and a huge personal best of 21.81 seconds, the fastest time run by a woman this century. She then took part in the women’s 4×100m relay that brought home the gold in 41.98 seconds. Felix closed out an amazing championships with another gold medal and perhaps the fastest 4×400m relay leg ever by an American woman at a major championship. Felix’s leg was unofficially clocked by multiple observers as 48.0 . For her efforts, Allyson Felix became the second woman in history to win three gold medals at a single World Championships.

The American record holder over 1,500m, Lagat became the first man to win the 1,500/5,000m double at Worlds, and the first American ever to medal in the 5,000.
