Athletes with Eating Disorders: Tips for Coaches, Parents, Friends & Teammates

Eating disorders can be devastating to not only teams but also to families. Coaches and parents alike want their athletes to eat well and be healthy. The struggling athletes just want people to stop policing their eating and exercise. The athletes have difficulty talking about why they struggle with food; they instead communicate unhappiness by starving or stuffing their bodies. This distracts them from the pain of feeling “not good enough” and other hard feelings.
Unfortunately, too many athletes struggle with food issues. A survey of more than 400 female collegiate athletes indicated they typically believed their bodies were not good enough and wanted to lose five pounds.

It’s Sunday morning here in Eugene which means I have a long run to complete. During my base phase I will run as far as 14 miles for my weekly long runs and though i know these training sessions are extremely important, I don’t really look forward to them. That is why I generally procrastinate all day and usually head out in the afternoons. This allows me to actually enjoy a relaxed morning with a large, calorie rich breakfast.
Today, as I was fixing my usual Sunday morning, pre-run meal, I got to thinking about what I eat. Some of the most common questions I get about my training are in regards to nutrition. There are some athletes who are a bit neurotic about what they eat, and I guess I would have to say that I am not one of them.

One of the more popular diet methods out there for athletes looking to improve performance is carbohydrate cycling. It is used by athletes with specific training goals and advising from experts. Not only does it help to ensure that your leptin levels (a hormone that regulates body fat and calorie intake) do not change drastically, but it helps keep energy levels up as well.
The body prefers to work off carbohydrates during exercise. While it can run effectively on fat if you work at a lower intensity, as soon as you try and perform high intensity work you will find yourself becoming fatigued, because your body needs glucose to rev up its engine for harder workouts.
