Section: News & Results, Track & Field
Shannon Rowbury and Matt Tegenkamp [Pictured] dominated the 3-K’s, while Khadevis Robinson just held off Nick Symmonds in the men’s 800m to highlight two days of action at the AT&T U.S. Indoor Championships here. The meet served as the U.S. trials for next month’s IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics in Valencia, Spain, with the top-2 finishers in each event earning provisional berths on the U.S. team.
As expected, Tegenkamp defended his title, but now has the distinction of winning the national 3000m crown in the slowest ever time since the event was introduced to these championships in 1987. In fact, his 8:02.52 clocking is the only winning time north of eight minutes in the history of the meet.

Rob Myers claimed his second USATF Indoor 1500m title with a stellar time of 3:40.89. The former Ohio State star bided his time in the pack for the first kilometer before taking control during the last quarter mile.
The race got off to an honest start with Kalpanatit Broderick taking it out in 57.82 for 400m and slowing a bit to split 1:59.82 for 800m. He was followed by Myers, Stanford Alum Russell Brown, and Sean O’Brien with the rest of the field still in tow.

USA Indoor T&F Champs: Teter Returns to Form with 800m Win

The Women’s 800m marked a triumphant return to the top for U.S. record holder Nicole Teter. Teter ran 1:58.71 to set the U.S. record back in 2002 and was a major factor on the world 1500m scene before a slew of injuries slowed her in recent years. However she did break 2:00 last year and ran a 2:03.80 a few weeks ago. Her race here was her first national championship since 2003.
Tonight’s race was led early by Nicole Cook, who took the field through 200m in a brisk 29.6. She was followed closely by Teter, Miesha Marzell, and Tiffany McWilliams on the outside. The order was unchanged through 400m which was reached in 1:01.17.

Former Indiana standout David Neville claimed victory from the first heat of the Men’s 400m final at the 2008 USATF Indoor Championships. Defending USATF Indoor 400m champion Greg Nixon came on late to win the second heat but was unable to beat Neville’s blistering time of 46.34.
The first heat of the 400m final was led through the 200m by James Davis in a quick 21.64. Neville bided his time and went around Davis on the back stretch to claim the win in 46.34. The second heat was also closely contested, with a false start perhaps preventing the competitors from getting out of the blocks as hard as they intended.

Former University of Arkansas standout Christin Wurth-Thomas put on a dominant front-running display to win her first national title at the 2008 USATF Indoor Championships. Wurth-Thomas ran an outstanding 4:27.18 full mile last week at the Tyson Invitational and followed it up with a 1500m victory here in 4:14.21.
Tonight’s race started off with a very slow first 400m (1:17.9) as the runners jockeyed for position and settled in. Confident in her strength, Wurth-Thomas surged to the lead at that point and never looked back. Jenelle Deatherage and Amy Mortimer gave chase with the rest of the field stringing out behind them.

Former Wisconsin standout Matt Tegenkamp used a blistering final quarter to successfully defend his 3k title at the 2008 USATF Indoor Championships. “Teg” was followed closely by training partners Chris Solinsky and Jonathon Riley in what amounted to a sweep by Jerry Schumacher’s boys.
The race started at a very pedestrian pace and was led by Chris Solinsky and then Anthony Gallo. A tightly bunched pack went through their first four 400m splits in 1:10.3, 2:16.4, 3:23.2, and 4:30.5. The pace picked up slightly after the mile as Daniel Kanyaruhuru briefly took the lead and went through 2000m in 5:36.6.

Section: News & Results, Track & Field
The Women’s 3000m at the 2008 USATF Indoor Championships was a very closely contested race until former Duke star Shannon Rowbury shifted gears and dropped the field impressively in the last 300m to claim the title in 8:55.19.
The race started with a tight pack reaching the 400m in 1:12 and the 800m in 2:25.37 led by Kristen Anderson. From there Jen Rhines took charge and was followed closely by Erin Donahue, Shannon Rowbury, Katie McGregor, Julie Culley and Amy Hastings (in that order). They reached 1200m in 3:36 and the mile in 4:48.83, right around 9:00 3k pace.
Hastings dropped off a bit as Rhines continued to push the pace and it became a 5 woman race as the 2k was reached in 6:02.9 and 2400m in 7:17.4. Katie McGregor and Julie Culley made bids to move up but were unsuccessful as they were forced outside.
