Section: News & Results, Road Racing
The New York Road Runners (NYRR) have released the final start list for tomorrow’s Healthy Kidney 10-K. Not included is
two-time ING New York City Marathon champion Marilson Gomes dos Santos who had intended to run the race. Unfortunately for dos Santos, a Brazilian, his passport was not returned to him in time from the U.S. Consultate in Sao Paulo with his required visa stamp.
“I regret for not being able to travel to New York for this race,” Gomes dos Santos told Brazilian reporters on a specially arranged conference call this morning. “This is a race I really intended to be on for.”
The elite field is as follows. Athletes will be competing for a $7500 first prize plus a $20,000 bonus for breaking Dathan Ritzenhein’s Central Park record of 28:08 set at the Healthy Kidney race in 2007.

Famiglietti Holds Off Nelson to Win USA 15-K Title
Posted March 14th, 2009 at 2:23 PM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Road Racing
In cool and foggy conditions, Anthony Famiglietti won his first USA 15-K title today in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Gate River Run, but the 30 year-old Olympic steeplechaser nearly lost the race to former Wisconsin star Tim Nelson who mounted a surprising come-from-behind sprint at the finish.
Famiglietti appeared to be cruising to a $17,000 payday ($12,000 for the win plus the $5,000 gender battle bonus in which the top women were given a five-minute headstart), passing women’s leaders Katie McGregor and Amy Begley about two-thirds of the way into the race. He had already broken free of Nelson, Fasil Bizuneh, Dan Browne, Jorge Torres and Ian Dobson.
But descending the Hart Bridge in the final kilometer with a 100m lead, Famiglietti didn’t realize that Nelson had dropped Bizuneh and was making up ground, quickly. Just as he did in the recent USA Cross Country Championships when he was chasing Meb Keflezighi the final lap, Nelson mustered a mighty final surge and nearly caught Famiglietti just before the finish line.

USA 15-K Championships On Tap for Saturday in Florida

Section: News & Results, Road Racing
The 32nd edition of the Gate River Run will take place on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., and will serve as the USA 15 km Championships for both men and women for the 16th time. A prize money purse of $58,000 is on the line, and eight Olympians have committed to the race, USA Track & Field reported.
Defending champion Andrew Carlson leads the men’s field. In extremely winding conditions last year, Carlson won by nine seconds over Dan Browne, 44:12 to 44:21. He pocketed the $12,000 first prize plus an additional $5,000 “equalizer” bonus for getting to the finish line ahead of Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor who, with the other elite women, had a five minute head start.
“I’m from North Dakota so I’m used to wind,” Carlson said after the race.

Trying for both the open and USA titles will be national steeplechase champion and 2008 Olympian Anthony Famiglietti, 2004 Olympian Dan Browne and USA indoor 3000m champion and 2008 Olympian Matt Tegenkamp. Browne finished third overall at this event last year, behind Kenyans Simon Ndirangu and Richard Kiplagat, and won the USA title.
The women’s field is led by Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist and defending champion, Shalane Flanagan, who will try to win her third USA title this year (she has already won the national cross country and 10,000m crowns).

Team USA: Day 4 Track Recap

Team USA earned five medals Monday in Beijing, two of them gold.
BROWN-TRAFTON WINS FIRST GOLD MEDAL FOR U.S.
Stephanie Brown-Trafton surprised many as she became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the discus since 1932. After a rocky first three days, this was the first gold medal for the U.S. at the Beijing Games.
Brown-Trafton’s first throw of 64.74m/212-5 was unmatched by her competitors.
“I told people when you make the final anything can happen. I had a far throw and nobody else stepped up. I won a gold medal!” she said after her victory.
U.S. DOMINATES SWEEPS MEDALS IN 400m HURDLES
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Angelo Taylor won his second Olympic gold medal in 8 years, running a personal-best time of 47.25 seconds.

Fam Should Make Beijing Steeplechase Final An Honest Effort
Posted August 18th, 2008 at 4:00 AM by Jimmie R. Markham
Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics
Anthony Famiglietti wants a bronze medal in Beijing. He has stated that he can’t do any better than that because so many of the other athletes are cheaters.
Even so, he’ll most likely have to get a huge PR in the Beijing men’s steeplechase final. Of the 15 men in the final, Fam is ranked only 12th, both in season’s best and in PR. He may even have to set an American record to get on the medal stand. Since Dan Lincoln’s AR is 8:08.52 and Fam’s PR is only 8:17.34, that would be an improvement of 8.52 seconds for him. But even that may not be enough.

Most Favorites Advance in Men’s Steeplechase Qualifying

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics
Highlighted by a front-running performance by American Anthony Famiglietti (Pictured), most of the medal favorites made it through this morning’s qualifying round of the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Running in heat 2, Famiglietti immediately burst to the front, and within three laps had amassed a nine second lead. Although he was caught by the chase pack on the final water jump, led by Sweden’s Mustafa Mohamed and Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemboi, he sprinted strongly over the final barrier and finished third in a personal best 8:17.34.
“There’s more heart in there,” said Famiglietti told Race Results Weekly after the race. “I just have to get it to come out.”

Willard Wins Trials Steeple in American Record
Posted July 4th, 2008 at 8:00 AM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics
Anna Willard, the 2007 NCAA steeplechase champion who had to contest last year’s AT&T U.S. Outdoor Championships on an injured ankle, ran the fastest ever 3000m steeplechase by an American woman here last night as the U.S. Olympic Trials resumed after a two-day break. Her winning time of 9:27.59 was also the fastest-ever women’s steeplechase performance on U.S. soil.
“I just felt so fantastic,” an enthusiastic Willard told reporters after the race.
Willard, her short blonde hair accented with a bright red streak she had dyed-in just for the Trials, followed the early lead of reigning NCAA champion, Jenny Barringer of the University of Colorado, her chief rival for last night’s title. They were joined by Lindsey Anderson and Nicole Bush of Michigan State University, and the pace was strong.
“I wanted it to go out fast like it did,” said Anderson who is coached by former City of Los Angeles Marathon champion Paul Pilkington. “That is what we were planning on and I knew if I could stay right with Jenny and Anna that I would be there at the end and be able to finish strong and make the team.”
