Lemoncello Carries British Hopes into World Cross

It’s not often that a major world championship comes to Great Britain, seemingly a prime opportunity for the host country’s best athlete’s to shine. However, only a handful of Britain’s best have answered the call to run for Queen and country, and an athlete with an American father and a Scottish mother who works part-time at a restaurant in Flagstaff, Ariz., will be the U.K.’s top man when the gun sounds for the senior men’s 12 km race here on Sunday afternoon.

Andrew Lemoncello, a talented steeplechaser who starred at Florida State University and won the ACC indoor titles at 3000m and 5000m last year, is excited to compete in Holyrood Park. Rooming with Irishman Martin Fagan in high altitude Flagstaff where he is coached by American Greg McMillan, Lemoncello has come through a snowy winter with some solid training under his belt.

Britain Makes First World Champs Team Selections

UK Athletics released their first team selections this morning for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics which commences in Osaka, Japan, on August 25.

The first selections to the team are as follows (data courtesy of Tilastopaja Oy):

MEN -
800m: Michael Rimmer (Liverpool, Pembroke & Sefton), 03-Feb-1986, 1:45.23 PB.
1500m: Andy Baddeley (Harrow), 20-Jun-1982, 3:34.74.
5000m: Mo Farah (Newham & Essex), 13-Mar-1983, 13:09.40.

Fast times, upsets & successful title defenses highlight Friday’s NCAA action

Fast steeplechases and 5000s, where Wisconsin’s Chris Solinsky (Pictured) defended his title, highlighted the track competition on Friday at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Sacramento’s Hornet Stadium.

First up was the men’s steeplechase which saw favorite Aaron Aguayo out fast from the gun with Arkansas’ Peter Kosgei, Florida State’s Andrew Lemoncello, and Mississippi’s Barnabas Kirui right on his heels. Aguayo continued to lead the foursome through four laps in 4:28.3, then Kirui jumped into the lead with three laps to go. Kirui easily pulled away from the field, with Lemoncello running alone in second and Aquayo, Colorado’s Bill Nelson and others battling for third. Kirui extended his through to the finish to win in a personal best 8:20.36.

Favorites advance during
Day 1 of NCAA Championships

The 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships opened on a relatively cool Wednesday at Sacramento’s Hornet Stadium.

While not devoid of drama (especially for the participants, their coaches, and families) the first day featured qualifying rounds. LOTS of qualifying rounds!

For the distance fans, the schedule featured prelims in the 800-meters during the afternoon, then was capped off with four straight steeplechases followed by four 5000-meter prelims.
