Posted September 12th, 2008 at 12:00 PM by Jimmie R. Markham
Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Special Features, Interviews, Podcasts, Road Racing
Today I had the pleasure of speaking with American steeplechaser Lindsey Anderson who over the past couple of seasons has become one of the best runners in the United States. She had a breakthrough season in 2007, finishing 2nd in the NCAA Championships steeplechase and then finishing 3rd at the US Outdoor Championships to earn a trip to Osaka. In 2008, she finished 2nd at the US Olympic Trails while setting a PR of 9:30.75, thus becoming the 5th fastest American steeplechaser of all time and earning a trip to the inaugural Olympic women’s 3000 meter Steeplechase. I caught up to Lindsey after her return from France where she ran a time of 9:45.28 to win the steeplechase in the DecaNation meet in Paris, France on September 6th, 2008.
Download the podcast to listen to Lindsey talk about her Olympic experience, her thoughts about the improvement in the women’s steeplechase, her role as assistant coach at Weber (pronounced “wee-ber”) State and how that helps her as an athlete, her plans for 2009 and the 2012 Olympics. Listen as Lindsey discusses the reality of competing as a clean athlete against possible cheaters, her plans to compete in road races over the next couple of months and much, much more!

Rupp Hopes Wanamaker Mile Will Help Him Get to Beijing, Faster

When he steps on the track Friday night for the Wanamaker Mile at the 101st Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, Galen Rupp will be looking well past the finish line, all the way to Eugene, Ore. It will be there in six months time that the 21 year-old NCAA 10,000m record holder will be trying to make his first Olympic team, and he wants to be ready if his 10,000m qualifying race comes down to a kick.
“Obviously, the 10-K is my best event and that’s what I’ll be running this summer and at the Trials,” Rupp said at today’s New York Track Writers’ luncheon as he sat next to his coach, Alberto Salazar. “The goal this winter is to drop down in distance.”
Rupp, who is on a leave of absence from the University of Oregon, has yet to break four minutes for the mile. He has terrific endurance, evidenced by his 27:33.48 10,000m personal best. But improving his raw speed, Salazar said, will give him another tool to win longer races, even if it means losing in the short term.
“I’m going to take my licks,” said Rupp boyishly.

Adam and Kara Goucher head back to Boulder to take on America’s best at XC Champs
Posted February 7th, 2007 at 10:08 AM by Afton Cohen

They’re attractive, they’re talented, and they’re headed back to Boulder. Former NCAA stand-outs Adam and Kara Goucher have returned to the city of their collegiate glory to compete at this year’s USATF Cross Country Championships at Flatirons Golf Course.
The powerhouse couple has teamed up with Alberto Salazar with the Nike Oregon Project, and under his stellar and unique training the two are ready to take on the world. Salazar, who won three consecutive NYC Marathons from 1980-1982, is extremely committed to his new team.
The Nike Oregon Project incorporates underwater treadmills and high altitude simulation systems to adequately prepare runners like the Gouchers. The couple seems to have adjusted quite well to these new changes and are ready to shoe how far they have come. Adam said:

American distance runners beginning to catch up to their East African opponents
Posted January 18th, 2007 at 5:00 PM by Kevin McGinn
Section: News & Results, Marathons, Olympics
Looking at the results of most major marathons reveals confirms the well know fact that: East Africans make great runners.
There has been much speculation about why there is such a disparity between course times for East Africans and runners from other nations. One possible reason is that Ethiopians and Kenyans do quite a bit of running in their lives, starting at early childhood; another possibility is that they do a considerable amount of training at high altitudes. The latter is something that can be emulated by runners around the world and it is starting to be noticed as an indispensable training practice. This has proved to be a very valuable tool for American runners as they have begun to make significant strides in catching up to their East African opponents.
The 2004 Olympics in Athens was an important event for American running. Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor each took home a medal for their efforts, ending a long period without award for US competitors. Keflezighi and Kastor took home the silver and bronze respectively.

Benefits of altitude training
Benefits of altitude training
Posted December 11th, 2006 at 8:13 AM by Emily Hoskins
Section: Running & Training, Training Tips
Many endurance athletes utilize altitude training. While it was once a controversial topic, researchers now universally agree that when done correctly altitude training offers many benefits.
So how does altitude training work? When you are exposed to hypoxia (oxygen reduced environments) your body struggles to produce the required energy needed to perform due to less oxygen available. This struggle initiates many physiological adaptations that enhance the efficiency of your body’s respiratory, cardiovascular, and oxygen transport systems.
