Exercise and Air Pollution: Exposure may increase risk of lung, cardiovascular damage

woman drinking in sunThe American Council of Sports Medicine (ACSM) released the following news article on exercise and air pollution May 31, 2007.

An unfortunate aspect of today’s environment is the significant amount of noxious air pollutants including ozone, carbon monoxide, fine and ultrafine particulates. This problem is especially troublesome in urban settings, near major highways, and in indoor ice arenas. Exercising while exposed to air pollution puts people at increased risk of lung and cardiovascular damage. A featured science session at the 54th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) addressed the issue of exercise and air pollution, outlining the dangers of air pollution and possible actions to help reduce risks from exposure.

USATF, ACSM team up for “Be A Champion”, several donations in New Orleans

USA Track & Field LogoAlong with our partners, USA Track & Field (USATF) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) have funded a significant donation to New Orleans-area track programs devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. These programs are critical to the development and recovery of young people as they rebuild their lives. This program and donation is designed to support:

  • Local youth track clubs still in existence;
  • The USATF Southern Association - the organization charged with the responsibility for operating all track/cross country programs outside of the school setting;
  • Key city-owned facilities - Tad Gormley Stadium and New Orleans City Park - in desperate need of equipment and or upgrades of existing equipment.

The treatment goal for type 2 diabetic individuals is to achieve and maintain near to normal blood sugar levels and optimal fat levels in the body. With exercise the body becomes less resistant to insulin. Aerobic exercise is commonly prescribed.
