I am proud to announce that Paul Peterson, a Senior Writer for TheFinalSprint.com and TrailFit.com, has qualified for the November 3 U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials.
On Saturday, Paul completed the St. George Marathon’s fast course in 2:18:09; meeting the U.S. Olympic “A” qualifying standard.
A former cross country runner at Calvin College, Paul now trains and lives with his wife in Logan, Utah. He also works as a GIS and Photogrammetry Specialist at GEO/Graphics, Inc. and is the owner of Marathon GIS.
Six other men qualified for the Trials at St. George, including men’s winner Nick Schuetze (2:16:42), Sean Sundwall (2:18:55), David Danley (2:19:34), Steve Macintyre (2:20:47), Nicholas McCombs (2:20:50), and Logan Fielding (2:21:47). Petersen, Danley, McCombs, and Fielding are all from Utah.
Ten women also qualified for April’s Olympic Trials in Boston, but only women’s winner Deeja Youngquist of Albuquerque (2:36:06), met the sub-2:39 “A” standard.
TheFinalSprint.com and I would like to congratulate Paul and the other qualifiers on this noteworthy achievement and wish them the best of luck at their respective Olympic Marathon Trials.

USA Track & Field and the Boston Athletic Association have announced that registration for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Women’s Marathon will open tomorrow, Friday, October 5. The event will be held on April 20, 2008 on a unique multi-loop course through downtown Boston and Cambridge.
To enter the Olympic Trials, women must first qualify. The event’s “A” standard is 2:39:00, while the “B” standards are 2:47:00 in the marathon or 33:00.00 in the 10,000 meters. The qualifying standards must be met from January 1, 2006 through March 23, 2008 or at the 2005 USA Marathon Championships (October 2, 2005).
Currently 127 women have qualified for the Olympic Trials, with 16 having met the “A” standard. Among the qualifiers are Joan Samuelson (1984 Olympic Trials champion and 1984 Olympic marathon gold medalist), Colleen De Reuck (defending U.S. Olympic Trials champion), and Deena Kastor (2004 Olympic bronze medalist).

American Brooks Still Needs Steeplechase Qualifier

The clock is ticking on American Tom Brooks who failed yesterday to land a qualifying time for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics which opens in Osaka on Aug. 25. According to USATF rules, Brooks must secure an “A” qualifying time of 8:24.60 by Aug. 1 to claim the spot on the U.S. team he provisionally earned by finishing third at last month’s AT&T USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis.
Brooks, 29, clocked 8:32.71 at yesterday’s 26th Meeting de Atletismo in Madrid, well short of the standard. Although he already has surpassed the “B” standard of 8:32.00, he needs the “A” because the second place finisher in the USA Championships, Aaron Aguayo, only has the “B” standard and only one “B” athlete is permitted by IAAF rules. By finishing ahead of Brooks at the selection meet, Aguayo is assured of a team berth.
U.S. Champion, Joshua McAdams, already has the “A” standard and is all set for Osaka.

New York offers trials women chance to upgrade status

American women who have achieved the “B” standard of two hours and 47 minutes for next spring’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women’s Marathon in Boston are being offered a special chance to advance to the “A” standard of 2:39:00 through a program announced here today by the New York Road Runners (NYRR).
The NYRR will provide a cash incentive of $2500 to any U.S. woman who improves from the “B” to the “A” standard during the 2007 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 4, according to president and CEO Mary Wittenberg. To increase the likelihood of success, the NYRR will be offering travel and lodging assistance to up to 30 American women who have met the “B” standard.
So far, 120 women have qualifed for the Trials, but only 16 have met the tougher “A” standard. “A” standard athletes will have their travel, housing and meals paid for at next spring’s Trials, while “B” standard athletes must pay their own race-related expenses.
