LIVE at the Boston Marathon: 7-time Tour de France Winner Lance Armstrong Finishes in 2:50:58
Posted April 21st, 2008 at 12:49 PM by Jared Markowitz
Section: Special Features, Live Race Coverage
Seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has finished his first Boston Marathon in a very respectable 2:50:58, good for 488th place overall. Lance reached the halfway split in a conservative 1:26:52 before running an impressive negative split on the hilly second half of the course. The effort was Armstrong’s third marathon and followed his 2:46:43 clocking in New York this fall.
Leading up to this race Armstrong was a bit apprehensive, noting a lack of training and a few nagging injuries. Nonetheless his performance was solid and bodes well for his planned attempt at 2:30 this fall in New York. Lance ran Boston to raise money for his Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charitable organization that actively contributes to cancer research.

Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot has won the 112th Boston Marathon in a blistering time of 2:07:46. It is his third consecutive Boston victory and fourth overall, matching the legendary Bill Rodgers. Cheruiyot used a brisk early pace and a monstrous surge in the Newton Hills to pull away from the field and run unchallenged to the finish. He fell just short of his of 2:07:14 course record (set in 2006) but still earned a convincing victory. With the win, the inaugural World Marathon Majors champ likely clinched a spot on the Kenyan Olympic marathon team this summer.
Several other men took advantage of the outstanding conditions and boisterous crowds to post incredible times. Morocco claimed the next two spots with Abderrahime Bouramdane finishing second in 2:09:04 and Khalid El Boumlili claiming third in 2:10:35. In the closest race in the 112 year history of the Boston Marathon, 22-yr old Dire Tune of Ethiopia defeated Russia’s 25-yr old stallion Alevtina Bikitimrova. Tune ultimately proved to be too strong as she took off with 100m to go, finished 2 seconds ahead of Biktimrova, and collapsed after breaking the tape.

LIVE at the Boston Marathon: Tune, Biktimrova battle through final 3.2 miles in extremely close race

Tune and Biktimirova a 5:12 mile between 22 and 23, and they continue to run essentially stide-by-side as they head towards the 24 mike mark.
Tune looks more comfortable than Bikitimirova at this point, and most believe the young Ethiopian also has better finishing speed. Therefore, Biktimrova needs to find a way to either make a move or hang with Tune and the legendary Ethiopian kick.
The next closest elite woman is Rita Jeptoo and she is almost 1:30 behind.
