Distance Races Also Thrill At Reebok Grand Prix

Reebok Grand Prix

It is true that most of the 6,000-plus spectators who filled Ichan Stadium here, especially the 1,000 or so Jamaicans, came to see explosive sprinters like Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix. Their cheers, deafening during the sprints, were largely lacking during the distance events, despite the entreaties of RRW’s favorite meet announcer Scott Davis.

However, some exciting sprint finishes in the longer races did get the crowds on their feet, in particular the finish of the men’s 5000m where Shadrack Kosgei of Kenya and Ali Abdosh of Ethiopia duked it out on the final 100m, the first race after a 45 minute delay caused by a heavy thunderstorm. The pair were running close to 13-flat pace throughout the race, and it took a 56-second final 400m by Kosgei to lock down the win by just 4/100ths of a second, 13:14.46 to 13:14.50. Abdosh was sprinting so fast in the final meters he nearly fell as he crossed the finish line.

“I thought the sprint was fantastic,” said a beaming Kosgei. “I was really strong.”

A Winning Return: Powell victorious in 2007 debut at Belgrade

Powell2.jpgStruggling with knee tendonitis, 100m world hecord holder Asafa Powell was apprehensive about his upcoming race at the Artur Takac Memorial in Belgrade, Serbia. Tuesday night, however, Powell laid his fears to rest. After running a current world-leading time of 9.97, Powell was understandably satisfied with his return to competition.

Despite an evenly matched start, the Jamaican sprinter asserted his experience and renowned speed mid-race; distancing himself from the field, Powell powered to a 9.97 finish—the lone sub-10 time of the night. With second-place finisher Churandy Martina at 10.11 and a third-place tie for Frater and Lewis-Francis in 10.19, Powell’s impressive run established his contending presence for the 100m in the 2007 season.

justin-gatlin.jpgApparently an eight-year track and field ban for a failed drug test isn’t slowing down one of the fastest men in the world. Last Tuesday, the NFL’s Houston Texans worked out Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic 100-meter gold medal winner. The workout was one of the Texans weekly workouts where they take a look at potential players for upcoming seasons. Although they wouldn’t be willing to sign him for this season, they are looking at him for next season or beyond and could sign him as early as late December of this year. Xavier Carter and Jeremy Wariner have both decided to run in the London Grand Prix on July 28, 2006 at the Crystal Palace. Carter, nicknamed the “X-Man”, and Wariner will be joining an incredible field of runners at the race, including Englishman Asafa Powell.

Powell is tied for the 100m world-record with Justin Gatlin. Unfortunately a leg injury forced Gatlin to pull out of the much-anticapted 100m race versus Powell and has sidelined him until August. The London Grand Prix meet would have been the first race between Gatlin and Powell in a year.

Gatlin_Powell.jpgGatlin equaled the Jamaican’s world record time of 9.77 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix in May. Powell tied the mark again in Gateshead, England, on June 4th.

Americans Carter and Wariner have had unbelievable performances the past two weeks; rising them to the level of international stardom.
