2008 Beijing Olympic Preview: Women’s 100 Meter Hurdles

Women’s 100 Meter Hurdles
The Schedule: heats, Sunday Aug 17; semifinals, Monday Aug 18; finals, Tuesday Aug 19
The Americans: #1 Lolo Jones, #10 Dawn Harper, #11 Damu Cherry
The Contenders: #2 Brigitte Foster-Hylton (JAM), #3 Delloreen Ennis-London (JAM), #4 Josephine Onyia (ESP), #5 Sally McLellan (AUS), #8 Susanna Kallur (SWE)
The Stats: Records, 2008 List, 2007 Worlds, 2004 Olympics
The Medal Picks: T&FN - Jones, Ennis-London, Kallur; SI - Jones, Kallur, Cherry
The Story: Jones, the World Indoor champ, had her career breakthrough at the Olympic Trials and knew it. Since then, she has beaten all of her rivals at Super Grand Prix meets in Stockholm and London, if only barely at times. She goes into Beijing wearing the mantle of favorite but not an overwhelming one.
Foster-Hylton runs hot and cold; in her major races this year she has four wins but no seconds or thirds. Onyia’s performances have been similar but not as good. Ennis-London has been far more consistent but with less upside. After Jones, McLellan has been the hottest hurdler over the last few meets.
The biggest question mark is Kallur. She broke a seemingly unbreakable indoor World Record, then came up injured during the World Indoor championships. A flare-up of that same injury has kept her from racing since early June, and this is not an event in which a big rest period is helpful. She’s good enough to win, but how close to her best will she be?
Note: Athletes’ rankings refer to TheFinalSprint.com’s World Points Standings, and medal picks come to us from Track & Field News and Sports Illustrated, respectively.

World champions Michelle Perry and Reese Hoffa stayed true to form, while Walter Davis and LaShawn Merritt also picked up victories Saturday in the first day of competition at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany.
Repeating their finishes from the World Championships in Osaka, Hoffa and Adam Nelson went 1-2 in the men’s shot put with throws of 20.98m/68-10 and 20.95m/68-8.75, respectively. Dan Taylor was fourth with 20.74m/68-0.5, Christian Cantwell fifth with 20.25m/66-5.25, and Garrett Johnson eighth with 19.26m/63-2.25.
Two-time world champion Michelle Perry won the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.68 seconds, .02 ahead of Spain’s Josephine Onyia in second. IAAF World Athletics Final: Women’s 100m Hurdles

Going into the IAAF World Athletics Final, Sweden’s Susanna Kallur seemed to have American Michelle Perry’s number, having ruined Perry’s hopes of getting a share of the $1 Million Golden League Jackpot by beating her in Zürich. She’d then rubbed it in with another win (and a personal best of 12.49) in Berlin.
It wasn’t meant to be, however. After four (yes, four) false starts in what had to be partially blamed on technical problems, Lolo Jones (USA), Sally McLellan (AUS) and Kallur were all disqualified. Kallur ripped her numbers off her uniform in disgust.
