Bean Counters Threaten To Close Ottawa’s Only Track
Looking for a potential savings of $125,000, beaureaucrats in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, are threatening to close down the Terry Fox Athletic Facility, the only track in Ottawa. The facility is named after Terry Fox, the Canadian runner who – despite having one leg amputated because of cancer – ran across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. College To Honor Larry James, ‘68 U.S. Olympian
Larry James, part of the gold-medal-winning 4×400m relay team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, will be honored by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. James has worked at the college as a track coach, athletic director and finally as Dean of Athletics. Evel Knievel Was A Track Athlete
You might not have known this, but Evel Knievel, who died yesterday at the age of 69, was an outstanding track & field athlete. The death-defying daredevil, an exceptional athlete who played hockey and ski jumped, was also a pole-vaulter on the Army track team. Read more at: [NY Times][Wikipedia]

Hayward Field Track “Fastest in the world”
Hayward Field, the site of next year’s Olympic Track & Field Trials, has a new track surface, one that has been “designed to be the fastest track surface in the world.” Some specs of the new Benyon BSS 2000 surface: “It features maximum return of energy and superior shock absorption, courtesy of a bio-engineered force reduction layer of butyl rubber and full-depth color polyurethane, which allows for daily training without stress injuries. The track is finished with a custom-made surface consisting of embedded Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) granules, which allow for advanced traction.”

Mysteries of Trail and Track Etiquette Revealed
An article in the Tallahassee Democrat (FL) reveals some of the mysteries of track and trail etiquette. Apparently, running newbies have not learned some of the basics, such as jogging in the outside lanes so that faster runners can have the inside lanes for interval training. Tyson Gay hopes to conduct 100m dash master class in London

Tyson Gay will be taking a crack at Asafa Powell’s 100m dash world record time of 9.77 seconds this coming Friday, August 3rd, 2007 at London’s Crystal Palace venue in the Norwich Union London Grand Prix meet.

Powell has run the 100m Dash in 9.77 seconds three times, first doing so on June 14th, 2005 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.

Justin Gatlin has also posted a time of 9.77, but he is currently under a doping suspension, leaving questions as to the validity of his marks. His hearing for a reduction or lifting of his current 8-year ban is set for today.

Gay is having a breakthrough season, having run a time of 9.84 seconds in the 100m Dash and a time of 19.62 seconds in the 200m Dash. Both are world-leading times for 2007:
