Earlier Date for Milano City Marathon

Milano_City_Marathon_Start_2007 The Samsung Milano City Marathon will be held on an earlier date this year, moving to Sunday, November 23, from its usual position on the first Sunday in December, organizers announced today. Organizers also hope that the earlier date will translate into faster times.

“It is our target to break the Italian all-comers record in the men’s race,” said Federico Rosa, the Italian athlete manager who is the elite athlete coordinator for the event.

That mark is 2:07:45 set by Simeretu Alemayehu of Ethiopia at the Turin Marathon in 2001. So far this year, there have been 28
performances equal to, or better than, that time. The event record is 2:07:58 set by Benson Cherono of Kenya in 2006.

Organizers said that the course had been slightly altered to allow for faster times. The start and finish of the race are now both located at the Piazza Castello in the center of the city.

The top athletes expected to compete on the men’s side include Kenya’s Duncan Kibet (2:08:33 PB), Tanzania’s Christopher Isegwe (2:10:21) and Italy’s Danilo Goffi (2:08:33). Kenyan Pamela Chepchumba, the defending champion (2:25:36 PB), is the top entrant on the women’s side. Her main challengers are Serbian Olivera Jevtic (2:25:23) and Italian Anna Incerti (2:30:55).
